Alan Greenspan dies at 100

financeJun 22, 2026895,878

Alan Greenspan died Monday at 100 from complications of Parkinson's Disease, his wife Andrea Mitchell said. Greenspan led the Federal Reserve for 19 years under presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush, overseeing a long expansion and emergency actions after the 1987 stock market crash. He became known for market-moving congressional testimony and the opaque Fedspeak that often influenced interest-rate expectations, and in 2008 he said he had "found a flaw" in the market ideology he helped promote. His mix of market-friendly policy and light regulation reshaped U.S. finance, is blamed for contributing to rising inequality and the vulnerabilities exposed in the 2008 financial crisis, and his death closes a defining chapter in U.S. central banking.

Even the Ayn Rand acolyte Greenspan eventually admitted that he was wrong: Markets can't regulate themselves. But Wall Street, K Street and the Beltway all still act like they can and do. So an UNPROFITABLE rocket company with hilariously unhinged AI ambitions is the most valuable company on earth

I have always thought that Greenspan did grave damage to America with his support of one-dimensional corporate governance.

davidtdorais.bsky.social22

...We NEED re-regulation to pre 1979 levels that puts back in place antitrust/antimonopoly norms; banking, insurance, medical and all corporations divestiture to 5% national and international market share, and non profit NGO status for ALL hosting internet/social media services.

QOTL 🇺🇦🇨🇦🇬🇱🇵🇦17

Indeed His lack of imagination was his blindspot. He couldn’t see how banking became fundamentally corrupt. And capitalism has lived on life support ever since.

George14

I looked but couldn't find the interview where he admitted he would sometimes speak gibberish when speaking to Congress knowing their egos wouldn't allow them to admit they didn't understand what he was saying and would just go along with whatever came out of his mouth.

Human nature, when sadly apeshit, when allowed; is selfish, greedy and unethical. He helped usher in Gilded Age 2.00 we live amid. ...

Good riddance. He wrecked the greatest economy on zearth.

The guy cost me and many other homeowners thousands of dollars. I cannot give any thought of recognition or sympathy.

Obviously, he had good health insurance...

Very, very wrong...another piece of deregulation that left this country & its citizens vulnerable.💔

Ironica7

He called it irrational exuberance, we call it greed, fraud and delusional, just what our dear leader suffers from…. 😡

For me, the most shocking thing he ever said was when everything crashed in 2008. He said it never occurred to him that markets would not always act in their own best interests.

Contrary to the popular beliefs of Wall Street -- Main Street didn’t pause the daily struggle to offer a moment of silence for Alan Greenspan.

And featured 94 times in the unredacted parts of the Epstein files and god knows how many time in the redacted parts. I don't really care what party a SA aligns with. Burn them all. Trump, Clinton, all of them.

He told the rich sociopaths exactly what they wanted to hear.

Watch the 2009 PBS Frontline show "The Warning". Amazing storytelling about how Greenspan, Summers and Rubin were not going to let some "little missy" like Brooksley Born tell THEM there was a problem with swaps and other OTC derivative instruments. The 2008 financial crisis said "hold my beer".

Sarcasmo Ultra BLAM!4

The same deregulation that led to the 2008 near collapse of banking, mortgage and the automobile industry, selling bad debt and handing out EZ credit to people that couldn't afford it.. And now they want to deregulate again. FFS, they make a living off of avarice, "Trust me, bro!" won't fly...again!

Greenspans prior decisions while in the Federal Reserve helped lead us into the Great Recession. I worked in the market during this time. Every day I was talking people off the edge.

Not enough is made of his twisted education. Both he and my father, who would have turned 90 last week, sat at the feet of Ayn Rand in her Manhattan salons. Both were young Jewish men who felt aggrieved by the prejudice they had to overcome compared to their intelligence and drive. Both clung to...

He damaged my life by raising interest rates to deliberately increase unemployment, under both Bushes.

Yeah. I recall Greenspan telling Americans to buy a home using disastrous sub-prime mortgages. When folks warned him of the risk from adjustable rate and interest only mortgages, he publicly criticized them. They were right. He was wrong.

🧵“What she did…was to make me think why capitalism is not only efficient and practical, but also moral” - Alan Greenspan, speaking about his guru Ayn Rand in 1974. It's worth understanding the role that this partnership played in unleashing the savageries of the modern market.

When Greenspan was still working in the corporate sector, Rand’s ideas about the “utopia of greed” infused him with a powerful sense of mission: apparently, making money wasn’t just good for him - it was good for society as a whole. As for those who got trampled? Rand helped with that too:

Rick Maywald36

Ayn Rand is a potent philosophy for--teenagers--in need of a hero's journey. By the time a boy is 25, Ayn Rand should be put down. Also notice she collected Social Security when eligible. Loved seeing her get whacked on the Phil Donohue show back in 70's. What a smug ass she was.

inzer hoxha12

The most disastrous thing the Soviet Union ever did was to teach Ayn Rand to read.

Predictor Holly 🇵🇸🍉✊9

Ethical egoism is perhaps the stupidest idea ever. The idea that people are rational egoists, such that we ought to empower that impulse to generate surplus value is inconsistent with the idea that people would just want free shit under socialism. May Greenspan forever rot in hell.

It is so crazy inefficient. Had he never seen the waste dumps? The broken, destroyed humans? The endless pointless duplication of effort? The ridiculous pissing waste that is most of advertising and marketing?

ah, russians, is there nothing they can’t do poorly? how is Barth the days anyway? enjoy this 6 hour analysis of atlas shrugged (it’s pretty funny) youtu.be/_LxrZncFlQU?...

Tak For Alt 2

Ugh. In my 20s I was already pretty socially progressive. My boss and I had big disagreements on govt, social policy, etc. He asked me to read Atlas Shrugged and said it would change the way I thought. It did. It further entrenched my beliefs that anything Ayn Rand-like was evil-like.

@bibliophile99.bsky.social Alan Greenspan’s economic worldview + philosophy were profoundly shaped by his close association with Ayn Rand. As a core member of her inner circle—ironically known as "The Collective" — Greenspan adopted her staunchly pro-capitalist, anti-regulation ideals.

So one of those that thought printing money and handing it out to those already drowning in money solves everything is dead.

this caliber of man never made it this far back in the days when women could easily poison their husbands and communities would 100% know why, quietly let it pass, and help with the children. our society used to have a way of filtering out vestigial testosterone golems. go team lil splash o bleach!

The path of his life and career is another example of incestuous nature of the Epstein Class on full display. Never forget: They are all connected. That’s why the impact of their greed and hoarding behaviour on regular people is never taken into consideration by Congress, or properly reported.
