Lewis Hawkes, 36, appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court charged with five counts of attempted murder aggravated by reason of having a terrorist connection in connection with attacks targeting the Muslim community in west Edinburgh. Police say the attacks began near Broomhouse Mosque at about 20:30 on Friday and left five people injured; prosecutors also charged Hawkes with assault, robbery, breach of the peace and culpable and reckless conduct. The terrorism aggravation formally classifies the incidents as motivated by anti-Muslim hatred, increasing potential sentences and activating counterterrorism and hate-crime procedures.
