Zohran Mamdani jumps into NYC public pool on opening day

newsJun 27, 2026586,252

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani jumped into the Thomas Jefferson Pool in East Harlem on the city pool season opening day, wearing a full suit. The plunge revived a longstanding mayoral tradition that the previous two mayors, Bill de Blasio and Eric Adams, skipped. City Hall reporter Katie Honan had asked Mamdani in April whether he would take the inaugural dip, and he followed through at the event. Posts around the event noted this year marks the 90th anniversary of New York City’s WPA era outdoor pools. Mamdani’s swim served as a ceremonial kickoff to outdoor pool season in the city.

Mayor Mamdani took the mayor's Inaugural Swim in east Harlem this morning to open the city's pool season. (Look out for sea hags, Zohran!) Naturally, he wore his swimsuit.

Among Maryland folk, this calls to mind Mayor William Donald Schaefer's 1981 kept promise to swim in the seal tank if Baltimore's new aquarium didn't open on schedule. A genuinely ineloquent politician, Schaefer had a LaGuardian charm to him nonetheless. Mamdani moreso, but with lethal eloquence.

I love how some people continue to speak in absolutely deranged terms about this guy, like he’s some kind of Stalinist Jew-persecuting dictator threatening to drag the entire country into his iron grip, and meanwhile he’s doing shit like this

So nice to see joy in the face of a leader again. When was the last time anyone did?

2026 marca os 90 anos da inauguração de piscinas públicas em NY, construídas por um programa do New Deal de Franklin Roosevelt para combater o desemprego da Grande Recessão. Elas foram abertas para o verão pelo prefeito, que mergulhou de terno.

This only happened because @katiehonan.bsky.social is the best local reporter in any city. Props to @thecityreporter.nyc for forcing this adorable moment.

This reminds me of that shot of Nixon walking along the beach in his shoes and suit, but this is cool and joyful.

Den Menschen zugewandte Politik, die gute Laune macht - gar nicht mal so schwer.

If this isn't considered one of the greatest political stunts (in a good way) then I don't know what is. This is amazing.

In a full suit, Mayor Zohran Mamdani jumped into one of the city’s public pools on opening day. Our City Hall reporter, Katie Honan, asked the mayor in April whether he would commit to the dip — a tradition that former Mayors Bill de Blasio and Eric Adams skipped.

the nypost really can’t help themselves can they: “Hizzoner joined dozens of young kids at Thomas Jefferson Pool for the plunge and broke the rules in the process, which requires all swimmers to wear bathing suits in the water.”
