Phil Weiser defeats Michael Bennet in Colorado Democratic primary
Big upset in Colorado: AG Phil Weiser defeats U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet to win the Democratic nomination for Governor. Weiser, the state AG with deep local roots, surged late as the election approached. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/l...
I’m a Democrat and a Coloradan and it’s not a big upset. It what we expected and voted for.
So glad about Weiser! I prefer Bennet out of politics. I can’t wait to see who primary’s him (and will likely be getting my vote). He can take his AIPAC and billionaire money and retire.
I hope Weiser can send Tina Peters back to prison where she belongs.
And he would not have pardoned peters.
YAY. Wouldn't call it a big upset. We here in CO want someone who brings a sock full of quarters to a fight, not someone who confirms Donald's judges and nominees.
We’re so over Bennet in Colorado. Can’t believe Hick bear Julie Gonzales 🤬, but best of all is Melat Kiros ahead of Diana DeGette! Major coup for progressives if Kiros wins!
RESULT: In an upset, even if it was looking likelier in recent weeks, Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser has defeated Senator Michael Bennet for the Democratic primary for governor. Bennet has been the state's centrist senator since his 2008 win. He'll stay in the Senate (term ends in 2028).
This is people power winning! Phil Weiser fought hard for working families and stood up strong against the Trump agenda while others compromised. Colorado Democrats chose bold leadership over status quo.
Bennet shouldn't have voted for eight of the unqualified cabinet picks. Sick of these damn Dem moderates pretending this is Business as Usual. This Admin is looney & they won't say NO to it.
This loss is blood in the water. Hope a strong leftist challenger is ready
I predict that Bennet retires in 2028 and Gonzales actually becomes Senator.
He should resign his Senate seat, but he won’t. The people have spoken and they hate his corporate ass.
If you're a Democratic incumbent whose state has already gone you better be thanking your lucky stars you went early. New York seems like it may have been the dambreak.
James Carville enthusiastically endorsed Bennet for president in 2020, and I will not let that be forgotten
hey minnesota, it looks like when a shitty sitting senator runs for governor, you don’t ACTUALLY have to hold a coronation primary!! you can actually just run someone against them and then beat them!! just a note for the future!! i’m not mad or anything!!
congratulations specifically to the pathetic alcoholic footstool for fascism known as @centristmadness.bsky.social
NEW: NBC News projects AG Phil Weiser defeats Sen. Michael Bennet for the Democratic nomination for Colorado Governor. Weiser will almost certainly be Colorado's next Governor as Coloradans have elected just one Republican Governor in 55 years.
Both Senators should be shook by tonight's results. I hope they learn the correct lesson. Fight. Fascism. Or. Step. Aside. #copolitics
And now if Bennet wants to quit the senate, we can elect a replacement instead of letting him hand pick one. (and/or pull a Blagojevich... who was once a guest of ours in Colorado IIRC)
Let me say one thing
Woot! At least one of my votes worked.
Michael Bennet has been punished for enabling Trump! Woo hoo
And that governor sucked ass.
It's not the call alone is striking; it's that the call has come _so fast_. If this doesn't land as a wake-up call among veteran Beltway Dems, I'm not sure what could.
This is a great result for so many reasons. Very happy to see this, and looking forward to his leadership, hopefully.
i know you're out there, colorado knowers!!
Super happy about this one. Weiser has really done well as AG, which not the usual stepping stone to the governor’s office. Historically, that has been Treasurer.
Fun fact: Michael Bennet's maternal grandfather was art dealer JJ Klejman, who sold many looted antiquities to US museums and collectors at his NYC gallery. Thomas Hoving said Klejman's sources were Syria and Lebanon
not a lot of people the protagonist lets out of the cornfield, I guess
We love to see an unabashed champion of trans rights winning
i would like to enjoy this more at bennet’s expense but i never approve when somebody takes attorney general as a stepping stone to be governor. (and it happens constantly in the U.S.) i don’t care if you did some occasional consumer protection type shit, 95% of the time you’re a cop!
For once, the good guy won.
This is great! I used to be a big Bennett supporter, but he's gone limp on trumplethinskin
WASHINGTON (AP) — Phil Weiser wins Democratic nomination for governor in Colorado.
@kylegriffin1.bsky.social where you at? Melat Kiros won the Democratic nomination according to MS NOW.
The only thing that has a hope of healing this country is experienced, intelligent, principled, anti-Est liberals - who understand that they don’t exist in a vacuum, and have to sell the vision to the party and country. These mindless progs w their militant mindless cancel culture isn’t the answer 😑
Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser beats Sen. Michael Bennet in the Democratic primary for governor. Bennet largely cleared the field last year when he unexpectedly decided to run, and there was a massive amount of speculation who he'd appoint to his Senate seat. Weiser's win makes that moot.
HELL YUP WEISERMANIA -- CATCH THE FEVER (srsly though @philweiser.bsky.social is one of the actual smartest people to hold public office and is a perfect antidote to Polis's bullshit, he's going to be a great governor)
Both Bennet & Weiser urged Jared Polis NOT to pardon election fraudster Tina Peters. Weiser documented his opposition as AG. He also has a long resume of public service, & he was a pragmatic progressive before the term 'progressive' got hijacked --so congrats Colorado!
i will say that the potential for this setup would have viscerally grossed me out
Phil Weiser, the Democratic attorney general of Colorado, won an upset victory in the state’s primary election for governor, defeating a sitting senator, Michael Bennet.
Bennet was too nice to Republicans
I don't think this is an "upset." Being a native Coloradan, I can tell you that the outcome is not particularly surprising. We are pragmatic here. And Bennet is a good senator. There is little to be gained by facilitating his shift to the governor's chair, given Weiser's similarity.
I don’t know any neighbors here who are upset. People in the Democratic caucuses were talking about this in March. Bennet is very centrist. Weiser isn’t far enough left for me, but I am pretty sure he’ll be better than Bennet. Or Polis. The big disappointment is Hickenlooper over Julie Gonzales!
Still too early to call, but Sen Michael Bennet appears to have failed in his effort to get the gubernatorial nod. The likely victor is Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser. I watched the debates, and had the sense that Bennet's support for Trump cabinet nominees killed him in this race.
NBC has just called this race for Weiser.
bennett escorted gorsuch into his confirmation hearing in the Senate. I vowed to work against him at that moment.
As a former Colorado resident, I called his office this week and asked him to stop co-sponsoring legislation with the likes of Senator Todd Young (MAGA-IN).
We sure don't need Polis 2.0.
And the whole appointing his successor in the Senate thing is off putting
What was he thinking? And I really like him!
Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser has won the Democratic nomination for governor of the state, beating out U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet.
...uh, I'm pretty sure that picture isn't Phil Weiser.
Has he never taken a picture before? You weren't able to find one?
The AP has devolved so far that they don't have anyone on staff who can match a picture to a post? Sad.
Is that Phil Weiser in the photo? I hardly recognize him.
The Beast will be pleased
“We proved the establishment wrong,” says Phil Weiser, who has won the Democratic gubernatorial primary. “The future of Colorado will not be decided by out-of-state billionaires…”
I’ll be with you live tomorrow morning on Colorado Matters with a panel of perspicacious politicos— left, right, and center. As of this post, Kiros and Kirkmeyer ahead, but no AP call.
In his victory speech, now underway, he says he’s been the people’s lawyer and he’ll be the people’s governor.
How quickly things change… 8 years ago, running for AG, Weiser *was* the establishment pick and very narrowly won his first primary against an anti-establishment leftist. It’s been funny seeing him lumped in coverage with folks like Kiros and Gonzales this year, because he is very much not that.
Man, if this guy doesn’t sign the Worker Protection Act into law next year…
As Colorado’s next governor, Phil Weiser is ready to get to work to build more affordable housing, lower costs, and protect healthcare access. Congratulations, Phil! Let’s win big in November.
waiting on your full endorsement of Melat Kiros
Dude just stop. Nobody actually believes anything you say bc we know just how much you hate the left wing of the party which is responsible for most of our wins & also the biggest. We’re fucking sick and tired of corporate centrist sellouts like you & the old rich fucks who’ve destroyed everything
Has anyone heard Ken Martin say that we should have Universal Healthcare, or that the Social Security cap for billionaires should be removed so that they'll pay the same rate we do? Has anyone heard ANY platform from the DNC? Ken's entire plan and strategy is "Hey, I'm not Trump."
We did it! Thank you to all who believed in this movement, donated, knocked on doors, hosted events, and voted! Tonight it's clear the future of Colorado doesn’t belong to out-of-state billionaires or corporations; it belongs to us. I promise to be a Governor for all of us. Thank you!
