Ocean surface temperatures hit record high for June

Copernicus scientists reported that global sea surface temperatures reached a record high for June, averaging about 20.9°C and surpassing the previous monthly records from 2023 and 2024. European researchers warned the warming was driven in part by a strengthening El Niño and noted the ocean has absorbed roughly 90% of climate-driven heat, so even small temperature rises carry large amounts of energy. Scientists told the Financial Times and CNN that the June spike has pushed the world into "uncharted territory" and could supply extra energy and moisture for storms, alter weather patterns, and stress marine ecosystems. Experts also said it is too early to know whether the heating will be temporary or worsen, noting annual sea-surface peaks usually occur in July and August. The immediate consequences include higher odds of extreme heat this summer, greater storm intensity, and additional pressure on fisheries and marine life.
