Melat Kiros ousts Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado primary
The AP has called the #CO01 Democratic primary for Melat Kiros over longtime incumbent Diana DeGette. Another major triumph for a democratic socialist challenger, one week after New York.
This comes moments after Denver's third update of the night, with the margins improving for the progressive challengers in two key races: —Melat Kiros now leads Rep. DeGette 49% to 43%. —Iris Halpern now leads state Rep. Camacho 52% to 48%.
And the DSA literally lied about her opponent getting money from AIPAC. See how this crap works in November
Change is in the air.
15 terms is more than sufficient
LFG Democratic Tea Party Wave!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Better fucking win the general
3 sitting Democratic House Representatives, and quite possibly a fourth soon, have lost their jobs to Democratic Socialist challengers, and while Senator Hickenlooper won his primary easily, it was a lot less easily than he probably thought he would. The Democratic Party is changing, fast.
It’s another win for outspoken antisemites. We called it out when it happened on the right, but when it’s on the left, there’s a lot of reluctance to call it out.
JUST IN: In a stunning upset, democratic socialist Melat Kiros has unseated 30-year incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette in the Colorado House primary www.huffpost.com/entry/democr...
Crazy any politician can hold a seat for 30 f$^King years. No wonder literally nothing gets done.
I’m happy that I am not the only one disgusted with status quo dems pretending they aren’t almost as bad as their opponents. More candidates like this please.
A socialist being someone who is anti corruption and pushes to stop rapists and paedophiles being pardoned by “Christian” fundamentalists.
Not stunning in the least too complacent and if one votes for bombs not babies, the young will turn on you And she voted to get Bibi the thug more bombs that was the clincher, as it will be for even progressives or centrists that support that horror in Gaza
30 Years? damn we need term limits
Not stunning when the incumbent is shown on tape defending her vote to send bombs to that thug Bibi If 'babies, not bombs' doesn't resonate with one, it should
So… at some point elected Democrats are going to realize that their constituents have moved left of them and want said electeds to either represent them or get the fuck out of the way, right? Right? …RIGHT???
It's not just in northeastern cities, y'all. Democrats are facing a reckoning where people actually want their party to stand for something.
“…She campaigned on a message of affordability, Medicare for All, abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement and supporting universal childcare.”
oh but it’s only happening in New Yo—
we can dither about a lot of things but DSA is taking fuckin scalps
DeGette is also the co-chair of the Reproductive Freedom Caucus (formerly Pro-Choice Caucus) reproductivefreedom.house.gov/about-rfc/le...
I am honestly so interested in seeing how many socdems will make up the Democratic Party by time generals end
Ya love to see it
Is this settled settled? DSA field you make my heart sing.
Someone get a camera on Carville 24/7 so we can actually see the moment where half his brain explodes out of his eye socket.
9NEWS' Phil Lipof from Diana DeGette's election night watch party" "There are four people in this room. Two of them are photographers. Two of them are reporters. The bartender is gone. Everyone is gone."
You got no candidate, you got no bar, then you got no audience, and there you are
She’s qualified for a nice pension. Thank you for your service but time to move on.
We can pop open our cell phones and in 30 seconds or less we can see how much cash Democrats like DeGette took from Israel and the corporate sector. They can't hide from their track record.
I would describe DeGette as “Dead tree.” Appearing completely normal on the outside, but completely rotting on the inside (from a campaign perspective). This is a win for Coloradans no doubt
I feel like it would be a good idea for the future to elect candidates who actually want the job
A little less graceful than the way Joe Crowley handled his loss to AOC. Oh well.
big 'Pina Colada as they call it for Zohran' energy lmao
Worst rendition of Billy Joel's "Piano Man."
Why does this sound like Auden?
Sigh. I've been one of those four.
I think it's fine to say DeGette deserved to lose if you want (I voted for her, somewhat reluctantly), but this is honestly a sadder ending than I think she's earned. She was never anyone's idea of a top-tier political talent, but she was a good and loyal soldier. I wish her no ill.
Funniest dynamic over the course of this was realizing she had been in office for that long but had very little in the way of loyal shooters or passionate defenders outside of the usual institutional cordiality. Big reason her campaign got so ugly as it went on, no one was coming to bail her out.
Hakeem Jeffries already gave her obituary in the press conference this morning
Let’s compare vibes to Melat Kiros election night.
I reckon they had DeGette on outta there.
I mean...this is just sad.
Holy shit. 30 year House veteran Diana DeGette defeated in the Dem primary by a challenger younger than her congressional service.
Mea culpa: Several months ago I predicted DeGette winning this primary comfortably.
Maybe this will help establishment Dems understand how pissed off people are at them.
Hakeem Jeffries needs to wake up. Dem voters are not buying what he’s selling. Pelosi was his idol and mentor, and she has huge accomplishments, but lots of dem voters have zero interest in going back to her gameplay of playing defense even when you have the ball.
She would been, I think, in the top 10 longest serving Dems in the House, and had her ass handed to her in the caucus (33/67 Kiros) months ago. She did not show any urgency since that. It was a throw out the bums primary
I remember looking up her twitter (back when...) and realizing that her posts about EPA oversight in 2019 got less engagement than my posts about wearing a STATA shirt to APSA. That would be on the order of about... 50 likes or comments.
I want the dumbest anti DSA dems to try and blame Wanda James for being a spoiler. As if all those votes would have somehow defaulted to Dianna. lol
Folks like DeGette paved the way for folks like Kiros, & I hope each can appreciate the other's service in this overdue changing of the guard
You love to see it. I do, anyway.
Wanda James (whoever she is) is going to get so much shit for "stealing" the primary from DeGette. Rather than, I dunno, interrogating the positions held by the candidates.
ive been waiting for this wave for a decade
Supporting a genocide and taking money from AIPAC are now a red line and litmus tests for Democrats, but the party's leadership and consultants haven't figured it out yet because of course. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/01/u...
1. I keep reading things by centrists and feel kind of shocked they seem not to have thought a hard shift left would really happen. The last decade has felt like one giant losing streak for Democrats. And even Biden's successes in office have been obscured by the withdrawal from Afghanistan and
Democrat Moderates who were bought by AIPAC still haven't figured out that siding with a genocidal apartheid state cost them the 2024 election and ushered in Trump's Reign of Terror. Now, they're trying to sabotage the midterms and once again snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
It’s so embarrassing that establishment Dems think skewing toward being Republicans is the key to victory, when all evidence over the last decade has proven that to be nonsense.
Bc they don’t want to give up Neoliberal cash, it pays well to accept lots of Corp & AIPAC money could you imagine RIP .. but I think we know why she died in office .. she was asked to retire … nope 😂.. could you imagine living there .. and NOT wanting to retire .. greed is a sin . 😮💨
Support for a Fascist-run state: clearly not popular. 👍
SCOTUS just gave Dem leadership and consultants avenues to get even more AIPAC, and dark money for political parties and candidates .... so good luck with that.
Leftists toppled a three-decade incumbent in Denver when democratic socialist Melat Kiros, an attorney who lost her job for speaking out about Israel’s genocide in Gaza, ousted Rep. Diana DeGette amid a wave of anti-establishment sentiment. interc.pt/4eIQtso
HUGE BREAKING: Democratic socialist Melat Kiros just DESTROYED 30-year-establishment Democrat Diana DeGette in a Colorado House primary. DeGette had been in power as long Kiros had been alive…👇 The tide is officially TURNING. 😎✨
Interesting you call her a socialist. In EU she would be called progressive or realist. Not a socialist 🤔 What you in US perceive as ‘left wing’ is ‘central or neutral’ in the Netherlands and EU
What exactly did Diana DeGette accomplish in her 30 years except accept donations from donors? Not exactly a household name given her 30 year tenure. She did collect over $1.6 Million from AIPAC though according to www.trackaipac.com/states/color... Good riddance.
