I have a colleague visiting me from the UK this week and the timing didn’t work to take the day off so I spent my Canada Day in a conference room with him and a student collaborator and a whole wall of chalkboards covered in equations but we found a pretty cool result so I’m happy

Canada Day is an odd one to me. I used to be genuinely patriotic. I was very proud of wearing the maple leaf on my arm 12 years. I'm no longer any of that, but I earnestly believe this place can be better than it was, and is. The sum of our parts is good, but we have to earn a better future.

It's partially why I joined the Army; an expression of solidarity and duty to the country my folks chose. A country that was at war in my teenage years. It's an unsquarable circle in my experience
