PlayStation to close PS3 and PS Vita stores, full shutdown by July 2027

gamingJul 1, 2026633,483

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced it will begin winding down the PlayStation Store on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita this year in selected markets, with the stores closing globally by July 2027 in most countries. The company previously attempted a similar shutdown nearly five years ago before reversing course after backlash. The phased shutdown means users will lose the ability to buy digital PS3 and Vita games from those consoles once local store access ends, leaving some older titles available only to owners who already purchased them. Observers highlight immediate preservation and access concerns because many games remain exclusive to those storefronts and cannot be newly purchased on modern PlayStation hardware. The closure timeline gives consumers and preservationists roughly a year before the stores go offline worldwide in July 2027 to acquire or archive titles still offered on those platforms.

Fuck it. Be prepared. Mod your PS3 and put PKGi on it. Hunting for physical PS3 games is about to get a lot tougher.

A tomar por culo la ludografía independiente y los experimentos digitales de hace dos generaciones. Cojonudo.

I feel much better about picking up that expensive copy of Klonoa a week-ish ago now. There's a cheap method to getting it on PS3 right now, but how long does that last once this store goes away? This is why physical media matters in the digital age.

Trash5

Friendly reminder that it's incredibly easy to hack a Vita and access literally every game released digitally in all regions.

Blitz Pride Mode4

absolutely insane time to announce the only way to buy our games is our online store Also by the way we are shutting down some of those online stores

adewa3

this announcement immediately after saying "hey we're stopping physical disc production going forward in 2028" makes that an even worse look than it already was

Good thing i already got the PS Vita essentials.

Between this and the removal of the disk drive. It feels worse and worse to enjoy gaming as a hobby.

While I personally don't care about what they're doing with physical games, this fucking sucksssss like crazy. I understand that those stores are old & it's not like they get new sales at all, but still. Those stores are still important & kicking. At least we'll still have access to our purchases.

Remember, kids. Once they no longer offer a way to purchase a game you want, piracy becomes acceptable. ❤️

Sony announced the PS3 and Vita online stores will be shut down globally by July 2027. Not only is Sony moving to a digital only model, but they are shutting down online stores too. Not a good day for fans of physical games or preservation. blog.playstation.com/2026/07/01/a...

It's official, Sony has completely forfeited the grandma-buying-you-a-game-at-Target-for-your-birthday market to Nintendo.

I'm a very, very, casual gamer. This largely ends console gaming for me in terms of new properties. I can still pull out my PS2, which I own, and play what, 100% of my games anytime I want.

Fuck me, let us own shit, you motherfuckers!

I walk into the room. I give the eyeball to every motherfucker in there. I sense they don't respect my authority. I pull my sidearm and, never breaking eye contact with the room at large, fire a shot directly into my genitals. "Who's tough now?!" I scream, or think I do, as I have lost consciousness

78% of PS games are bought digitally and that number is going down, so I can see the logic in this. But for me it removes the justification for playing on a console. If I can't even own the games physically I might as well get a Steam Machine.

ariana!! 🗡✨4

this is actually a wildly heartbreaking piece of news. physical media is the only way to TRULY own something, and spending $80-$100 on a new game that could potentially (and easily!!!) be lost or permanently deleted due to power outage, failed data transfers, etc. is an insane concept just gutted 😭

this coming out the same week they deleted 500 movies people paid for sure is a strategy, not a good one but a strategy

I hate having to buy games from Steam and Epic already. My PS4 was my last bastion for actual physical discs. If Sony is going the way of digital only, I will never buy one. I'll buy the PC version instead.

Nationally Published Troll3

It's kind of funny that people would never dream of buying physical PC games, but the idea of a console ending its physical disc production is shocking... but part of what makes consoles sell is that they are somehow different than a PC, somehow worth owning as their own stand-alone thing.

Christerious3

Breaking news: PS6 will literally have no games, thanks Sony
