PlayStation to close PS3 and PS Vita stores, full shutdown by July 2027
"We're ending physical disc production, but don't worry — we're ALSO shutting down our digital stores!" blog.playstation.com/2026/07/01/a...
"Well least this day can't get any worse" *Microsoft looms in the background*
youtu.be/kWSIFh8ICaA?... Sony, remember this? It didn't aged well..
i don’t know man. the whole gaming ecosystem is, at least to me, dying and rotten. everything is worse than it was 10 years ago. the ps4/3 generation felt like a golden age and now everything is going to shit. Idk if it’s covid, AI, or just the world burning but it’s depressing as all hell.
I really want this to blow up in their faces. I know it probably won’t and people will just keep chugging right along but man I am pissed at this decision.
A genuine shame. These platforms are the last bastion of PlayStation preservation. Dozens of games here Sony hasn’t and likely won’t add to the Classics lineup on Plus. RIP.
They literally just removed out digital movies, so they can literally remove our digital games. This is a HUGE L.
(lifts up suspiciously light ps6) I don't think there's anything inside this
kind of crazy that there was only a brief, 30 year period where you could truly own physical copies of films, games, shows, and music that you liked and now that's over
Single worst day in playstation history easily
This is really depressing I know PC is also digital only but at least multiplayer is free, mods allow better freedoms and I can do more with my PC There’s no way I’m buying a PS6
PS3 and PS Vita PlayStation Stores are closing starting August 2026 blog.playstation.com/2026/07/01/a...
-Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua – PlayStation Store on PS3 will close starting August 2026. -Additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries – PlayStation Store on PS3 will close starting late 2026. -In all other countries, PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita will close in July 2027.
Announcing the closure of a digital store the same time as announcing you’re no longer doing digital is a special kind of stupid.
Hey how about you make their fucking games available??? Friendly reminder to get mad about this now if you want either decision to change.
Sony: All games going forward will be digital only Also Sony: We're shutting down two of our digital storefronts.
They're gonna have massive discounts then. Right?
Wow, I bet those folks who spent $599 on a PS3 in 2006 are feeling pret-ty silly right about now. /s
Fuck it. Be prepared. Mod your PS3 and put PKGi on it. Hunting for physical PS3 games is about to get a lot tougher.
A tomar por culo la ludografía independiente y los experimentos digitales de hace dos generaciones. Cojonudo.
I feel much better about picking up that expensive copy of Klonoa a week-ish ago now. There's a cheap method to getting it on PS3 right now, but how long does that last once this store goes away? This is why physical media matters in the digital age.
Friendly reminder that it's incredibly easy to hack a Vita and access literally every game released digitally in all regions.
absolutely insane time to announce the only way to buy our games is our online store Also by the way we are shutting down some of those online stores
this announcement immediately after saying "hey we're stopping physical disc production going forward in 2028" makes that an even worse look than it already was
Good thing i already got the PS Vita essentials.
Between this and the removal of the disk drive. It feels worse and worse to enjoy gaming as a hobby.
While I personally don't care about what they're doing with physical games, this fucking sucksssss like crazy. I understand that those stores are old & it's not like they get new sales at all, but still. Those stores are still important & kicking. At least we'll still have access to our purchases.
Remember, kids. Once they no longer offer a way to purchase a game you want, piracy becomes acceptable. ❤️
Sony announced the PS3 and Vita online stores will be shut down globally by July 2027. Not only is Sony moving to a digital only model, but they are shutting down online stores too. Not a good day for fans of physical games or preservation. blog.playstation.com/2026/07/01/a...
I'm always sad when this happens, we will lose access to so many games. Then I remember that emulation exists. If the company removes the possibility to buy a game, then I won't feel bad for pirating it.
Geez! They really did a one-two blow this morning.
Great fucking timing Sony "Hey we're going all-digital. We're also shutting down all-digital"
I was already iffy on getting a PS6, but this soft confirms it’s digital only which is something I don’t support.
Sony are cowards for announcing this the day after we record our podcast Cowards I say!!
It’s extremely telling how you can announce that you’re no longer selling physical copies of games while simultaneously announcing alongside that you’re closing digital stores for past consoles.
This is where I really start to crash out 💔
And while people will say 'Nintendo will be the last bastion for physical games', they will also crumble under the pressure. It's saddening to think about the possibility that my great nieces and nephews will never be able to own or even play the same games that impacted my life while growing up.
I'm in shock. I believe very strongly in ownership/physical releases/competitive pricing. But physical editions are also HUGELY beneficial to indie devs like myself - both financially & for community. I urge @playstation.com to reconsider; if not their own games, at least for 3rd parties.
Let’s sum things up recently with PlayStation - Increased PS5 Prices - Removed over 500 movies/TV shows from PS Store - Still wants to Focus on live service games after a whole generation of failure with them - Closed Bluepoint - Stop Disc Production in Jan 2028 What a joke…
You forgot they closed stores for vita and ps3
I've played mostly on ps since ps1. Never before considered not getting the new PlayStation. Likely not getting PS6
Gaming companies really just competing to see who causes a crash first at this point...
90% of my library is physical. Fuck this timeline
Sony announces they will stop producing physical discs for PlayStation from January 2028. New video games will be released in digital formats only, through retailers and the PlayStation Store. (blog.playstation.com/2026/07/01/p...)
You never own digital, you're just renting the license Sony recently removed some movies from their digital library Sony's storefront will now be the only way to buy games for PS PS6 will be over $1000 So - pay more for something you'll never own and they can take away at any time Bye sony
If they do this we really need to have laws protecting digital properties from being taken down and discontinued.
And lemme guess…soon you’ll have to pay a monthly fee to even access the games…like they’re already trying to do with PS+
Here we fucking go 🙄
So first Nintendo started to normalize 80 price tag for games, Sony getting rid of physical disc's by 2028 and Microsoft just massively axing decades old game companies. Horrible managment all around
where is a dislike button, when i need one?
I miss getting a game as a kid and being so excited you read the back of the case and booklet on the way home home brimming with excitement. Oh how things have terribly changed.
To be fair, you stopped owning games when the discs just contained the license for the game. You had to download 90% of it since the game code doesn't live on the disc anyway. :)
man fuck this lmao
because digital storefronts are so reliable for keeping games avaliable
El infierno era esto. Capítulo II.
No body asked for this.
Super scam cuz the games take so much damn memory. The era of paying for stuff you can’t actually “own” is infuriating.
Y’all better make some noise. Bullying legit works and digital copies are anti consumer. I’m not buying GTA VI if it’s no physical and this might be my last Sony console if they go digital only.
Not even exaggerating this is one of the worst headlines I will ever read in my lifetime
Sony is ending the production of physical discs in January 2028, meaning that any game released after that will be exclusively digital. Also they're shutting down the PS3 and Vita Store. More info about that here: bsky.app/profile/syac...
something something you will own nothing, fuck corpos man
At least game key cards still had a physical cartridge you can hold in your hand this is just absurd
closing old consoles' digital stores the same day you announce that digital stores will become the only way to buy games has to be some of the foulest work i've ever seen
PlayStation has announced the end of disc games, starting in January 2028. Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only, it said. vgc.news/news/playsta...
Well. Fuck PlayStation I guess.
So let's get this straight. Sony has told everyone they'll happily delete your library and then said the only way they can get their games will be digitally. Galaxy brained messaging that.
Getting both bad news out of the way before they're being eclipsed by the Xbox layoffs.
So video games end in 2028, got it. (I’ll never pay £69.99 for a digital game, only justifiable for deep discount sales to offset the fact that there’s no way to know if you’ll be able to play it in 15-20 years like I can with PS1, PS2, GameCube, or Dreamcast games )
Sony and MS are neck and neck in the ‘who’s the worst company’ race.
I stop buying playstation games January 2028
It's official, Sony has completely forfeited the grandma-buying-you-a-game-at-Target-for-your-birthday market to Nintendo.
I'm a very, very, casual gamer. This largely ends console gaming for me in terms of new properties. I can still pull out my PS2, which I own, and play what, 100% of my games anytime I want.
Fuck me, let us own shit, you motherfuckers!
I walk into the room. I give the eyeball to every motherfucker in there. I sense they don't respect my authority. I pull my sidearm and, never breaking eye contact with the room at large, fire a shot directly into my genitals. "Who's tough now?!" I scream, or think I do, as I have lost consciousness
78% of PS games are bought digitally and that number is going down, so I can see the logic in this. But for me it removes the justification for playing on a console. If I can't even own the games physically I might as well get a Steam Machine.
this is actually a wildly heartbreaking piece of news. physical media is the only way to TRULY own something, and spending $80-$100 on a new game that could potentially (and easily!!!) be lost or permanently deleted due to power outage, failed data transfers, etc. is an insane concept just gutted 😭
this coming out the same week they deleted 500 movies people paid for sure is a strategy, not a good one but a strategy
I hate having to buy games from Steam and Epic already. My PS4 was my last bastion for actual physical discs. If Sony is going the way of digital only, I will never buy one. I'll buy the PC version instead.
It's kind of funny that people would never dream of buying physical PC games, but the idea of a console ending its physical disc production is shocking... but part of what makes consoles sell is that they are somehow different than a PC, somehow worth owning as their own stand-alone thing.
Breaking news: PS6 will literally have no games, thanks Sony
ALSO, did folks forget that Sony has already been implementing dynamic pricing? Or it's the same week they removed shit from people's libraries they paid for? You can't trust shit about the PlayStation store. Ever.
Those people suing Sony over monopolizing digital stores on PlayStation are probably over the moon right now. They just got truckloads of ammo to present in court
yeppp. told hub the news and we both immediately were committed to letting our psn+ roll over and start making a permanent shift. we've always been physical collectors so without that, there is NO point to sticking to that ecosystem and how often it disrespects it's customers
Like this is genuinely my cue to start saving up for the switch to PC moving forward, with S2 for Nintendo games. Sony ending disc production means third party is likely to follow, so if the future is all digital then I’m not locking myself into Sonys ecosystem
Sony is closing its PlayStation Store on the PS3 and Vita, beginning next month in certain countries. https://bit.ly/4y62fGr
Are Sony games going to be available on discs in future? No. But will they at least keep a full and comprehensive digital back catalogue for those who want to play older games. Also no.
Sony cerrará la Store de PS3 y Vita comenzando por algunos países el mes que viene,
