PlayStation to end physical disc production for new games from January 2028

gamingJul 1, 202618619,489

Sony Interactive Entertainment will stop producing physical game discs for all new PlayStation console releases starting January 2028. After that date, new PlayStation games will be available only in digital formats on PlayStation Store and at retailers. Games that have already released, or that release on disc before January 2028, are not affected and will continue to be sold in disc form. Sony says the change responds to shifting consumer preference toward digital media and will let the company reallocate resources to innovate how players access and buy games. The company also pointed readers to additional updates on PlayStation Store changes for PS3 and PS Vita announced the same day.

If you told me there are people are work trying very hard to bring down the AAA games market from within like a kind of Video Game Palpatine I'd probably believe you at this point

The future of gaming if the suits and shareholders have their way is that you'll own nothing and ask for even less. Don't support that bullshit. Speak with your wallet. It's the only voice they can hear.

our friends @gamehistoryorg.bsky.social comin' in hot on what the the ESA should be doing as the game preservation crisis accelerates: "Everyone agrees this is a serious problem but the ESA has repeatedly opposed the efforts of cultural heritage institutions to reform digital copy protection laws."

Proud to always support @gamehistoryorg.bsky.social and their stance adds important nuance and call-to-action for preservation efforts. If any media have additional inquiries, you can reach me at VGHF at oneprstudio dot com.

"asking museums to download a copy of Grand Theft Auto VI and hope it'll run in 50 years is not a preservation solution."

Not even a week ago, PlayStation announced if you purchased certain films through their VOD service they’ll be removed. You do not own anything that is purely digital. bsky.app/profile/cult...

The truth is, the industry doesn't believe video game is an art form. To the bosses, games are just products that make money for a while and are then scrapped. Why bother preserving them?

Sony: We're taking away digital movies you bought. No refunds. We're not making physical PlayStation games anymore. We're killing digital games on PS3 and Vita. ...why should I get a PS6 when it comes out then? If you want an expensive digital only gaming device, get a PC!

Imagine the sales pitch Sony PlayStation 6 Digital only, $1000, no more backwards compatibility with your old discs, ultra lengthy cross-gen period, slow first-party release cadence...what a steal! Is this some sort of challenge? Anger your fanbase as much as possible and see what you can sell?

There's a lot of reasons why Playstation no longer putting games on discs is bad but I think it has to be said that even if you don't mind digital gaming, Playstation is consistently the most annoying platform to actually gift digital games to someone, in that there's no way to do it at all

All these loose game cards give me anxiety

Notice the lack of Switch 2 game cards, wonder why that is

These pics are a few years old (this was only half of it at the time and it’s grown since then) and I need to clean up a bit before I take new ones but yes, you could say I am very invested in physical copies of games

Not even just games but here’s my films, music and books all on physical. Maybe it’s just me but part of why I love physical is I love being in my room with My Things

PlayStation and Xbox executives now. 😓 I can still play these games, despite some of these companies having gone bust or having their licenses expire. I've had some consoles die on me over the decades and they'll still run on a replacement console too. Ancient knowledge, crazy I know.

Showed a Sony executive my humble budding collection of physical games and he killed himself???

Share a photo of your physical video game collection to scare a PlayStation executive? Okay. I own all of these. If publishers are gonna play the “limited license” card, they’re gonna have to send someone to my house (in which case, I’ll have the police summarily remove them from my property).

Sony makes it official. No more physical Playstation games as of 2028. This is, no exaggeration, likely to be the single most anti-consumer, choice-limiting, destructive-to-the-medium decision in the entire history of videogames. A tragedy bordering on a crime. kotaku.com/sony-ending-...

Playstation ending physical games will be permission structure for other platforms to do the same. It will only lead to less in what you can own, companies controling it forever after purchase, further destroy more retail and job infrastructure, everything will get worse. I'm so mad I could scream ☹️

largestandusbsky.bsky.social37

And since they own the Blu-ray format, movies are next. Removing physical media in the middle of a manufactured storage cartel crisis, how do these idiots keep shooting themselves in the foot. Is gonna be heartbreaking saying goodbye to Playstation, but they brought it on themselves.

Pattern Repeater36

Announcing this the same week you announced that you're pulling 550 movies from people's libraries that they thought they "purchased" is a bold choice. This is going to hurt game sales overall because people are not going to be willing to spend $100+ only to have the rug pulled 5 years down the road

Bolthorn21

Looks like I'm dropping out of console gaming then. At least new stuff moving forward. Everything will just be an extended rental no matter what they actually call it.

Article should be titled, "Sony Kills Itself, Takes Videogame Industry With It."

Liam McPoyle17

This is pretty much the end of owning games. Some fine print will soon make all digital purchases "leases" or similar. You'll have to disconnect PlayStation from the network and enclose it in Faraday cage so Sony Smart TV doesn't erase your expired - now illegal - purchases from PS.

so after deleting a bunch of people's digital libraries they expect any iota of trust... let alone money? Thats... bold. Anyway buy physical media!

elia ayoub50

They’re all moving towards us no longer owning anything we pay for.

Joyce J Liu30

This is genuinely upsetting. I want physical discs with actual data on it. I want to be able to dust off a 20 year old console and be able to revisit the thing I paid for. 🏴‍☠️if we go full digital, media preservation is the correct response

Maddie Wagon29

Thousand-Year Door became one of my favorite games because my girlfriend's kid sister had it and didn't like it so she let me keep it when I asked if I could borrow it. Sony wants to ensure that avenues like that for discovering games are permanently closed.

Kyle Graham (Kyle Rodimus Prime Graham) 🇨🇦20

This is an outrage! They deleted their digital movies, and now they wanna get rid of their physical discs? This is gonna lead to a lot of backlash! #BoycottSony #SupportPhysicalMedia

Just think, one of these days the PlayStation will literally have no games.
