Portugal beats Croatia, 2-1, in World Cup last 32
yesterday the ref disallowed a Croatia goal because a sensor detected the ball infinitesimally touched a player's hair. this happened in the 103rd minute of a game that was supposed to be 90 minutes but then the ref added 10 minutes but then Portugal scored so he added 3 more without telling anyone
Soooooooo much better than the alternative (ref accurately and openly records all stoppages and games now last 3 hours).
The (American) football equivalent is rigidly measuring if the tip of the ball crossed the first down line based on a ref spotting the ball with "eh... I think it was about there when his knee went down," including when it's under a pile of large men.
It's like in (American) football where they pull out the chains to measure a first down to the inch after someone just eyeballed where the ball is spotted
Before the 2000s, the referee didn’t even tell how much added time there was.
My American mind cannot comprehend
It just seems arbitrary because people don’t know the rules, Portugal celebrated their winning goal for almost three minutes!
Going to the Portugal Croatia game but sitting silently so everyone knows that I don't support either colonialism or Nazi-collaboration.
Throwing my Gameboy into the sea in protest of the Empire of Japan's campaign in Burma
Remember to shake your head the whole time so people know you disagree.
Ummmm if we’re judging countries on past transgressions, well just throw the whole competition in the trash now.
Portuguese colonialism ended 60 years ago.
I need more information. What do you mean?
Portugal-Croatia has to feature the highest coastal territory as a proportion of the entire country since Chile played anyone
Oh don’t forget Norway in a coastline length to area ratio. Man, those fjords…
Now this is the kind of World Cup trivia I need!
I fear a future war by Bosnians who think Croatia is a greedy shape
Australia and New Zealand want a word
Unknowable, because England and Scotland have mystery coastlines en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coastli...
CONCACAF pretty stacked in that regard
Football decided by microscopic sound frequency detection is where we are now. Have to take FIFA’s word on this, but all those people clamouring for technology have got us to the point where two sides will never agree on what happened in that last dramatic moment of Portugal-Croatia.
Part of the issue is the public very unfamiliar with the use of this technology. People have not got used to it. Then, perhaps unfairly for the officials, is FIFA’s reputation problem generally. It is not widely respected as an institution making moments like this even more fraught
Agree with you on most things but people not agreeing on things in footy has nothing to do with technology
So kinda like the 1966 World Cup Final?
Just because one side didn't like it doesn't make it wrong! With every big decision one of the sides feels aggrieved, this isn't new.
For me, the point isn't about the technology, but about the rules. The offside rules must be updated in some situations for the VAR. Isn't so difficult. The offside rule is the rule most modificated in almost two centuries of football.
la palabra de la FIFA dejó de valer algo cuando le dieron un premio nobel inventado a un dictador wannabe (no valía nada de antes, pero bueno)
Ah, so science that detects something happened (contact, vibration) is the same as people who just say that it didn’t happen or that a machine can’t be trusted. Football both-sidesing is here!
"where two sides will never agree on what happened" was there ever a time when everyone agreed on what happened? "Have to take FIFA’s word on this" It is a good thing I'm not a sports journalist whose job it is to inform and can just cast aspersions on social media instead.
So, the right decision doesn't matter because it wasn't achieved with vibe based officiating. In a WC knockout game. What do you mean? It's not a case of not agreeing on what happened. The evidence was there on the screen. Croatia won't like it, but it won't make it the wrong decision.
Morning. Woke up to the news that Croatia had lost against Portugal (which I predicted, so not really much of a shock). Might be having a visit from our son this evening; haven’t seen him since the end of April, so that will be lovely ☺️ Hoping 🤞for an easy day, maybe a nice long walk. HAGD 🧡
Looks as if that game could have gone a different way. Hope you get a good time with your son.
Morning Didi. It sounds like you have a lovely day planned. Enjoy.
Too much technology being used in football - chips in balls!! Not sure Croatia deserved that result. X
