Switzerland beat Algeria 2-0 in Vancouver to reach the World Cup Round of 16, with Breel Embolo opening the scoring in the first half and Dan Ndoye adding a second goal eight seconds after the restart. Ndoye exploited a poor clearance from Rafik Belghali to beat goalkeeper Luca Zidane, while Embolo finished a move started by Remo Freuler and finished by Johan Manzambi after a pass from Granit Xhaka. Coach Murat Yakin's selection paid off as he started Ndoye for Djibril Sow and deployed Denis Zakaria at right back in place of the injured Luca Jaquez; Zakaria dominated defensively before his substitution with a knock in the 87th minute. Xhaka earned his 150th cap but Switzerland endured a first half in which Algeria held 60 percent possession and largely controlled play without creating a decisive chance. Riyad Mahrez announced his international retirement after the match. Switzerland will face the winner of Colombia or Ghana in the last 16 on July 7 at 22 00 MESZ in Vancouver, where Switzerland won both of its group-stage matches earlier in the tournament.
