FIFA is in talks to move the World Cup last-16 tie Mexico v England at the Estadio Azteca from 18:00 local time (1:00 BST Monday) to 12:00 local time (19:00 BST Sunday) because of forecast flooding and thunderstorms. The Football Association learned of the potential change through media and said it had had no prior heads-up; Mexico’s federation is also understood to be unaware. Broadcasters have told organisers a switch to midday is likely and local authorities may welcome an earlier slot to reduce overnight disturbances after recent street celebrations. Mexico coach Javier Aguirre condemned the proposal, saying “The schedule change hits like a kick in the stomach. We have to change the entire plan.” England players Morgan Rogers and Marcus Rashford said the squad would be ready regardless of timing. The move is being considered after weather-related disruptions earlier in the tournament, including an Ecuador match delayed by an electric storm and France’s game in Philadelphia held up by thunderstorms. Any final decision is pending and will be informed by recent tournament learnings about weather delays.
