sportsJul 4, 2026791,491

The 113th Tour de France begins today with a 19.6 km team time trial in Barcelona, the first time a team time trial has opened the race since 1971. Slovenia's Tadej Pogačar, winner in 2020, 2021, 2024 and 2025, arrives aiming for a fifth overall victory that would put him alongside Merckx, Anquetil, Hinault and Indurain. Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard and French debutant Paul Seixas are named principal rivals for the overall title, while Remco Evenepoel enters as Belgium's standout prospect and a favourite for the only individual time trial later in this Tour. During the opening TTT Evenepoel can claim the first yellow jersey, something he has never worn in his career, and 31 Belgian riders start this year, the most of any nation. Sprinters Jasper Philipsen, with ten Tour stage wins, and Tim Merlier, with three, are highlighted as main stage hunters. Race previews stress that the Barcelona TTT will be crucial for the general classification and will determine the first race leader going into stage two.

Climate change comes for the Tour de France and no amount of hydration breaks can save it.
