New Zealand vs France, Nations Championship
Okay, I'm gonna say it. I don’t understand the love Luke Pearce's refereeing seems to get. Masterly bordering on condescending in his communication and, to be honest, he doesn't seem to make any fewer mistakes or downright weird calls as anyone else. What am I not seeing? #NZLvFRA
He can irk me in that he seems to be correct so often that it can come across as pedantic for some decisions. But I do think his on game communication on when you can get your mits on the ball or what the state of play is is fantastic
He divides people but I am firmly in Luke's corner In fact most refs divide people
I think it’s his presentation. Ostentatiously calm and makes great play of communicating his decisions to captains et al. However, I believe your criticism is well made. Several of his well communicated calls were, frankly, wrong; and, they were substantive in the ebb and flow of the contest.
Clarity of comms, not afraid to change his mind when evidence demands it, and 'condescending' is warranted given the way players speak to refs. He also does well balancing intent and literalism in applying the laws.
