Charles De Ketelaere scored two first-half headers as Belgium beat the United States 4-1 in Seattle in the World Cup round of 16. De Ketelaere’s goals came either side of Malik Tillman’s deflected free kick that briefly leveled the match. In the 58th minute U.S. goalkeeper Matt Freese came out of his area, lost the ball under pressure from De Ketelaere, and Hans Vanaken side-footed into an empty net. Romelu Lukaku added Belgium’s fourth in stoppage time. The defeat eliminated the United States from the tournament and sent Belgium on to face Spain in Los Angeles for a place in the semifinals. The match report also notes Christian Pulisic was limping after a challenge, raising concern for the U.S. team’s fitness in the loss.
