Trump called FIFA over Balogun red-card suspension, president says

President Donald Trump said he called FIFA President Gianni Infantino and asked FIFA to review the red card handed to U.S. forward Folarin Balogun for a foul tackle in the United States’ 2-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina in Santa Clara. Trump said he only asked for a review and did not demand an outcome; FIFA’s disciplinary process then lifted the mandatory one-game suspension so Balogun could play in Monday’s World Cup round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle. Balogun entered the game as the U.S. team’s leading scorer at the tournament with three goals. Belgium’s soccer federation formally challenged Balogun’s eligibility, and UEFA called FIFA’s decision "incomprehensible and unjustifiable." Infantino issued a statement saying he explained the ongoing legal process and defended the independence of FIFA’s judicial bodies. Republican Sen. Ted Cruz and Secretary of State Marco Rubio publicly praised Trump for intervening while critics in the international sports world called the move an intrusion. The United States was eliminated after a 4-1 loss to Belgium in that round of 16 match.

Would they have won if they were playing with a feeling of avenging injustice of the red card and with their backs against the wall and knowing they needed one more game to get Balogun back? Who can say! But it would have been a more fun game.
