Daniel Alfredsson is joining the Toronto Maple Leafs as an associate coach, the team announced Tuesday, and John Gruden and Brad Werenka were also named assistant coaches. Alfredsson, 53, spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach with the Ottawa Senators and will be an option to oversee the Leafs power play next season. Maple Leafs head coach Jim Hiller praised Alfredsson's experience, leadership and understanding of the game in a statement. Senators owner Michael Andlauer said he wished Alfredsson was not joining an arch rival but called Alfredsson forever an Ottawa Senator and left the door open for a return. The Leafs did not retain Mike Van Ryn and Derek Lalonde from Craig Berube's staff. Alfredsson is a Hockey Hall of Famer who scored 35 goals and 75 points in 84 regular-season games against Toronto and added seven goals and 15 points in 24 playoff games. Last season the Senators finished with the eighth-ranked power play while the Leafs recovered from a poor first half to finish 15th after Marc Savard was fired and Steve Sullivan took over power-play duties.
