Karolína Muchová defeated Naomi Osaka 7-6(4), 6-4 at the All England Club to reach her first Wimbledon semifinal and will face Coco Gauff in the last four. Muchová, who had lost in the first round in each of her previous four Wimbledon appearances, served strongly and frequently serve-and-volleyed, using slices and blocked returns to neutralize Osaka’s power. She serve-and-volleyed eight times in the first set and won six of those points, and 40 percent of her first serves were unreturned in that set versus 33 percent for Osaka. Osaka, who had just outplayed Aryna Sabalenka in the previous round, showed that she can be a threat on grass and reached the fourth round or better at Wimbledon for the first time in this run. In the second set Muchová’s pressure eventually broke Osaka after a chaotic sequence of ace, double-fault, ace, double-fault culminated in an error on an overhead that delivered the decisive break. Muchová combined flashy shotmaking with consistent basics from the back of the court to close out the straight-sets victory.
