Zia Yusuf clashes with Nick Robinson on Radio 4 Today

journalismJul 8, 2026653,159

On Radio 4's Today, presenter Nick Robinson pressed Reform spokesman Zia Yusuf over Nigel Farage's bid to stand in the Clacton by-election and Reform's finances. Yusuf told Robinson that Farage was “bringing forward” the judgment of “the ultimate authority: the people of Clacton,” and argued voters, not regulatory bodies or courts, should decide on an MP’s wrongdoing before investigations conclude. Robinson challenged Yusuf on his personal wealth, saying “You’re a multi-millionaire. You made your money selling luxury helicopter charters and rare wines to the super-wealthy,” and pointed to reported gifts to Farage including a £5 million donation from a crypto billionaire. Robinson also asked whether Farage’s credibility would be restored by fighting Count Binface in a low-profile by-election. Yusuf’s answers were widely described by listeners in the sample posts as evasive and rattled, with critics highlighting his comments on immigration and establishment credentials. The interview left the immediate question of whether Reform will change its defence strategy unresolved and kept attention on the Clacton contest and Farage’s funding as the next focal points.

Zia Yusuf claims Farage is bravely "bringing forward" the judgment of "the ultimate authority": the people of Clacton. Two problems here: 1) He's insisting they judge *before* the full evidence has been heard, not *after*; 2) No constituency can exempt its MP from rules designed to protect us all

Zia Yusuf - shoved out to make a fool of himself for Farage - insists on #r4today that the people are the ultimate authority and that they should decide on an MP’s wrongdoing, not any regulatory body or the courts. It would seem the people don’t agree with him on that.

💥Nick Robinson to Zia Yusuf: "Do you really think that Nigel Farage's credibility will be re-establshed by fighting Count Binface in a by-election that nobody pays attention to?"
