Alexia Putellas signs with London City Lionesses

sportsJul 8, 202615281

Two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas has signed a three-year contract with London City Lionesses after her Barcelona contract expired, joining Michele Kang’s WSL club on a free transfer. Putellas leaves a 14-year spell at Barcelona as a four-time UEFA Women’s Champions League winner and World Cup champion. The New York Times quoted sources saying Putellas felt the WSL offered higher-quality opponents and a better overall environment than the NWSL. London City owner Michele Kang led the announcement and faced more questions than Putellas at the live press conference, underscoring Kang’s high-profile role in the move. BBC Sport and other outlets ran exclusive interviews and coverage, and commentators called the signing a “massive” transfer that could be key to taking London City to the next level.
