Canada confirmed the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan will open July 27, the federal government said. Canada and Michigan agreed Friday to open the six-lane, 2.4-kilometre cable-stayed bridge with support from the United States government and a package of cooperative measures on toll governance and transparency. The agreement includes a 15-year economic development fund tied to a portion of bridge profits and says the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority will seek U.S. concurrence for certain non-market toll-rate adjustments. Canada financed construction, which began in 2018, and the project carries a $6.4 billion price tag that the federal authority says has not increased despite delays. A previously scheduled ribbon-cutting for June 12 was postponed after the United States requested more time; in February U.S. President Donald Trump demanded that Canada hand over at least half ownership and other concessions. The bridge is expected to relieve congestion at the privately owned Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor tunnel, and the toll and governance arrangements require continuing coordination between Canadian and U.S. officials.
