The Justice Department issued subpoenas on Friday seeking to compel testimony from New York Times reporters who wrote about security concerns involving President Trump’s new Qatari-donated Air Force One. The subpoenas, signed by Jay Clayton, the U.S. attorney in Manhattan and a Trump nominee for director of national intelligence, require the reporters to testify before a federal grand jury in Manhattan this Wednesday and contain few specifics beyond asking about an alleged violation of federal criminal law. Federal agents delivered subpoenas to several reporters’ homes in some cases. The Times identified the journalists as Julian E. Barnes, Eric Lipton, Tyler Pager and Eric Schmitt and called the move a “brazen act.” David McCraw, The Times’s top newsroom lawyer, said the appearance of federal agents on reporters’ doorsteps should “shock the conscience” of those who believe in the Constitution and press freedom. The reporting at issue described security failings on the Qatari-donated plane, which coverage cited as having been retrofitted with nearly $1 billion in taxpayer funds.
