Employers told to dismiss thousands of immigrant workers

The Department of Homeland Security told U.S. employers to dismiss hundreds of thousands of workers who have been protected under Temporary Protected Status, including many Haitian nationals. Shifting enforcement deadlines have left employers uncertain about when affected employees will become ineligible to live and work in the United States. The guidance stems from an expected end to TPS designations for Haitians and other nationalities, which removes those workers' legal authorization to remain and be employed. Businesses with large numbers of TPS employees say the changing timeline is creating operational and staffing confusion. The loss of work authorization for these employees means widespread job separations and could lead to deportations once TPS protections lapse.
