Julián Álvarez curled a long-range strike in the 112th minute to break a 1-1 tie and send defending champion Argentina to a 3-1 extra-time win over Switzerland in a World Cup quarterfinal in Kansas City, Mo., on Saturday, July 11, 2026. Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring after a Lionel Messi corner, and Dan Ndoye had equalized for Switzerland in the 67th minute. The match swung when Breel Embolo was sent off after video review applied the mistaken-identity protocol to a yellow-card incident involving Leandro Paredes, leaving Switzerland with 10 men. Lautaro Martínez added a third for Argentina with seconds left in extra time. Messi’s nine-game World Cup scoring streak ended, but Argentina will face England in the semifinals in Atlanta on Wednesday.
