Sam Neill, the New Zealand actor whose five-decade career included Jurassic Park and The Piano, died on Monday 13 July in Sydney at the age of 78, his family said in a statement shared on his Instagram account. The family said Neill was surrounded by family, that his passing was sudden and unexpected, and that he had recently been declared cancer free after a 2022 diagnosis of stage three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma; they thanked staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital and asked for privacy. Neill was born Nigel John Dermot Neill in Omagh, Northern Ireland in 1947, moved to New Zealand in 1954, and adopted the name Sam at age 12. His breakthrough came with the 1977 film Sleeping Dogs and he rose to international prominence with Jane Campion’s Oscar-winning The Piano and Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park, in which he originated the role of Dr Alan Grant and later returned in Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World Dominion. Across more than 150 credits he played romantic leads and memorable villains in films including My Brilliant Career, Omen III, Possession, Evil Angels, The Hunt for Red October, Dead Calm, Event Horizon, Bicentennial Man and The Dish. Colleagues, directors and public figures paid tribute following the announcement, and the family said more details will be shared later as they grieve.

There is news I do not like to share. RIP Sam Neill. The New Zealand actor has had a prodigious career, notably in sci-fi. How could one forget his role in Event Horizon (1997)? But also Bicentennial Man (1999), Thor: Ragnarok, the Jurassic Park series, or his appearance in Invasion (AppleTV).
