Reform UK proposes jail for candidates using Irish, Gaelic or Cornish on leaflets

politicsJul 14, 2026172,106

Reform UK has tabled New Clause 107 to the Representation of the People Bill, an amendment drafted by deputy leader Richard Tice and co-signed by every sitting Reform MP including Lee Anderson, Robert Jenrick and Suella Braverman, that would require all election publications to be in English or Welsh only. The amendment would make publishing campaign material in any other language a criminal offence, punishable on summary conviction by up to six months imprisonment and/or a fine, and would apply across the UK including Northern Ireland. The proposal would criminalise election leaflets in Irish, Scottish Gaelic and Cornish and would affect routine bilingual material used in constituencies such as Na h-Eileanan an Iar. Five of six Cornish MPs signed a joint statement condemning the proposal and the Cornish nationalist party Mebyon Kernow called the amendment "unbelievable." SNP MSP Maree Todd called the measure "despicable" and said it would threaten anyone publishing election materials in Scots or Gaelic with prison, while an SNP source said lots of SNP campaign literature, especially in the Western Isles, would fall foul of the rule. The article notes the amendment would reach areas where Irish and Ulster-Scots have legal protections under the Good Friday Agreement and mentions the UK ratification of the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages in 2001; the piece also suggests Reform would face practical issues distinguishing English from Scots for enforcement.

Ah! Imposing the good ol’ British Empire on the ‘natives’ once again…

If you want to see an openly fascistic policy, here it is. Irish, Scottish Gaelic, and Cornish are native languages of these islands. They are all recognised by law in the UK. And you can bet Reform wouldn't stop there.

Banning languages in voting information or forms is a common tactic to lower turnout and prevent representation

Reform: England for the English! Respect our history! English person: *speaks Cornish* Reform: Not like that. Scottish person: *speaks Gaelic* Reform: Not like that either. Irish person: *speaks Irish* Reform: I don't think you're getting into the spirit of the thing...

Might explain why my local Reform MS still hasn't responded to any of my Welsh language emails. (that she's legally mandated to respond to yn Gymraeg.)

Andy Hollandbeck3

I don't know much about British political parties, but anyone who thinks this is a fair and reasonable rule shouldn't be allowed to run a bulldog look-alike contest, much less a country.

Fuck off, you nationalist small minded fascist little shits!

Can't believe how well they did in the Senedd 34 seats blows my mind. These people despise Cymru and her people language and culture.

😳 “What’s funny is that, to police this, you’d probably need multilingual policing. You’d actually require language skills to enforce it. [idk] if Reform were planning on creating multilingual jobs — I wouldn’t recommend this as the way to go about it — but that’s accidentally what they’ve created.”

All they have is this kind of shit. What’s their approach to the economy, our debt, education, the NHS, public transport? Who the hell knows! All they have is pathetic scraps aimed at looking pure bred and hostile to anything not English. They’re absolutely pathetic and totally unfit for office

Farage re'n kyjyewgh ha a verwelas va. Farage can fuck off and die.

Aileen McHarg11

Anti-Gaelic road sign chat taken to the extreme. There's a word for people who try to suppress minority languages.

Benjamin Bedbreaker9

Jail if you use a traditional language but not if you’re a corrupt bastard

Patrick - Here for the craic❗️🤷🏼‍♂️😉9

Odd that Farage & Reform want to ban what they consider foreign languages like Irish, Gaelic & Cornish.. but seem fine with Welsh 🤷🏼‍♂️

Casket Based6

Farage is so hard to look at. Such an ugly, repulsive man, inside and out. The kind of disgusting wretch you have to be to find him even remotely likeable.

David Hearn4

And yet he and his MPs constantly talk b*ll*cks - perhaps it would be better to ban that and make it an offence for politicians to tell lies?!

Conlangery4

Horrified at this proposal, but also fascinated that Welsh is not to be suppressed. I wonder if that has a correlation with where Reform has more support...

A Poor, Lazy, Sexy Fraud.4

Lmao the original white supremacy is so fucking funny, honestly. “Our pasty skin is SOOOOOO much better and different superior from THEIR pasty skin, on the same fucking island.”

John Kilbride4

Gaelic is an official language in Scotland, so I doubt this can stand.

Reform: For the "you couldn't make it up" file. “It’s discriminatory to the other indigenous languages of the UK." bylinetimes.com/2026/07/13/r...

There is nothing that Reform want more than opening a front in the culture wars against Scotland, Wales and revolution, or Ireland, Europe and the Good Friday Agreement. This would run afoul of the UK's international commitments, not least the ECHR bylinetimes.com/2026/07/13/r...
