Red Sox acquire outfielder Jahmai Jones from Tigers

The Boston Red Sox acquired outfielder Jahmai Jones from the Detroit Tigers on a trade in which Boston will send a player to be named later, and the club optioned third baseman Nate Eaton to Triple-A Worcester as part of roster moves on Tuesday, July 14. Jones had recently been designated for assignment by Detroit and was hitting .137/.219/.221 in 105 plate appearances for the Tigers in 2026, a low follow-up to his strong 2025. Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow made the move to add right-handed corner outfield depth to a largely left-handed lineup. Eaton appeared in 14 games for Boston this season, recording four hits in 32 at bats for a .125 average with one home run, five RBI, and two stolen bases; he was recalled on June 8, served a two-game suspension in early July, and had previously been optioned on April 30. Optioning Eaton creates an active roster spot for Jones and pushes Eaton’s playing time back to Worcester while the Red Sox manage injuries to infielders Marcelo Mayer and Trevor Story. The acquisition gives Boston a bounce-back candidate in Jones and immediate bench/outfield depth for the remainder of the season.

Per source, the Red Sox are acquiring Jahmai Jones (recently DFA’d) from the Tigers for a PTBNL. After an excellent 2025, Jones struggles to a .137/.219/.221 line in 105 PAs for Detroit this year, but he gives the Sox RH corner OF depth.

Last year, Jones hit .287/.387/.550 in 150 PAs for the Tigers, almost all against lefties. For a team that’s struggled against lefties, there’s obviously intrigue about whether they can help him restore that production.
