Orcas ram sunfish so hard prey explodes, may be playing
Sunfish explosions, dead salmon hats, fuck dem yachts… orcas have the darkest sense of humour in the sea and under no circumstances should we get on their bad side
I like how this makes it seem like the Guardian are particularly worried about them.
Orca vibes are very. Except Veronica Orca never gets cold feet. Orcas do not have feet.
I've just seen this incredible post by @ohlookbirdies.bsky.social bsky.app/profile/ohlo...
Imagine if the motherfuckers could post.
Think it’s a bit late for that
Always thought 'sea pandas' would be a better name for them than 'killer whales'
I simply love orcas and all of their brutal machinations! what new form of torture will they invent next! defector.com/orcas-are-ke...
while writing up this story I came upon this paper describing how orcas tail-slapped a stingray so hard that she ejected two embyros—again, seemingly for fun (image credit to Jesús Erick Higuera-Rivas) www.aquaticmammalsjournal.org/wp-content/u...
Today’s edition of “orcas are jerks”
Super interesting! Amazing last sentence, too.
Hank Green is not going to be happy about this
I keep thinking about this, particularly the video that catches the whale version of yelling "hell yeah, brother" to each other after smashing that fish into powder and ribbons.
I feel like, to the extent that cetaceans are an alien intelligence on Earth, these are the kinds of aliens we're scared of
Exactly how hard do you have to ram a sunfish to make it explode into a thousand pieces, like a watermelon hit by a freight train? Orcas are known for ramming prey (and sometimes yachts) but this is the first evidence of them doing it with so much force that the target disintegrates on impact 🧪
But why the heck would orcas ram and explode sunfish? Perhaps to make it easier for young orcas to feed on the scattered bits—or possibly for fun. Orcas are known for "playing" with their food, draping seal guts over their flippers, tossing pelts in the air and wearing dead salmon on their heads 🧪
On a whale watching trip I watched a massive transient male Orca breach and ram a sea lion. My word, the power.
Astonishing. And that they might just do it for fun to see something it explode is, well, mindblowing…
Orcas should do this, but with superyachts.
One orca holds the fish while another torpedoes itself into it. Eek.
When you weigh six tons, pretty much anything will explode when you ram it.
The most interesting thing is that sunfish-ramming is a game with rules. One orca holds the dead sunfish while the other takes a run at it.
god thats so scary imagine that just happens to you. youre just chilling and hten your exploded into a bajillion pieces wey
Can we bring back Orcas taking out yachts? That would be swell.
Practicing to ramp up their attacks on billionaires’ yachts. 🤞
there's a lotta people who believe Evil to be a trait unique to humanity and the orca exists to prove those people wrong
Heck yeah, you gotta hit through the target, like Office Linebacker Terry Tate.
The way this is written makes me wish headlines could have guitar riffs
Orcas = The Miami Dolphins Sunfish = my good friend Malik Willis
Why would anyone want to see a fish explode? 😨
If one watches the video studiously it clearly shows the ramming orca going away with the carcass and greater bulk of the sunfish still intact. The hyperimaginations of viewers only see the cloud of entrails and focus on that, thinking the entire sunfish was obliterated.
These guys are actually Dolphins, not whales. They seem to be evolving as the planet is dying. Learning new behaviors for survival? Bashing yachts for fun? Or to get barnacles off? Amazing creatures, deadly to other mammals and fish.
I would suggest the sunfish was long dead and already decomposing. (quite like Mitch McConnell) Your mileage may vary.
And that is why they called killer whales Not a fan that all 😒
The coolest thing is when the sunfish (Mola sp.) explodes, you get to see how gelatinous & insubstantial the flesh of these giant fish is. Even their skeleton is mostly cartilage, not true bone, altho they are teleosts Maybe this is how orcas say "Everyone knows mola mola taste just like ass"
“Ram the dum fish so hard it go boom” glad there are assholes in other species too
This video is next tier. It makes me wanna be a go pro guy so bad but I have no use
A friend of mine is the one who wrote the infamous sunfish post.
Orcas filmed ramming sunfish so hard it explodes in a cloud of scraps
some days you’re the orca, and some days you’re the sunfish
Han molido al Mola mola
The sunfish was already dead and has an abrasive skin which is difficult to eat. So they weren't hunting but basically cooking 🍽️
I was not prepared for the sound
Lo de las Orcas es una cosa…
i bet for a fraction of a second this felt so good
Filmed by Christopher Nolan on IMAX (2026).
This is how they practice for the yachts.
Nature, red in tooth and OMG WTAF
When the developer cuts the budget for death animations.
Some orcas have figured out how to turn an ocean sunfish into sunfish tartare: one orca holds the carcass and then another rams into it so it explodes. Watch the video (audio on to hear the marine biologist OH MY GOD OH MY GOD’ing into their regulator) [🎁] www.nytimes.com/2026/07/23/s...
It’s suggested that this ramming behaviour might be related to orcas ramming yachts, which kind of reminds me of this old Far Side cartoon.
Thank you for the link.
Orcas are hardcore communists man
