Adelaide Airport pulls conservation ads but keeps gas and mining ads

newsJul 24, 20261982

Adelaide Airport asked JCDecaux to stop digital billboards from the Murray-Darling Conservation Alliance, the Bob Brown Foundation and the Adelaide Park Lands Association during the Australian Labor Party national conference, saying the ads were "too political." MDCA’s "Save the Murray" ad, contracted to run from 13 July to 26 July, disappeared from a concourse rotation by the morning of 22 July, and the Bob Brown Foundation was told its four-location campaign running 20 July to 26 July would be pulled from noon on 23 July. Craig Wilkins of MDCA said the ads had been approved and paid for before being removed, and Mat Monti of the Adelaide Park Lands Association said a booked billboard at the main airport exit was declined the previous Friday. Senator David Pocock said the airport had also refused to run an advert promoting a gas export tax, and pictures from the concourse showed ads from Santos, the Minerals Council of Australia and Independent Schools Australia still running at the time MDCA’s ad was removed. The Guardian reports the "Australia runs on natural gas" campaign later stopped and one Minerals Council ad was pulled while an alternative council advert stayed on rotation. Bob Brown called the decision "Trump-lite behaviour" and urged Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to insist the environmental ads be reinstated immediately.
