Canada opens Gordie Howe International Bridge, U.S. disinvited

sportsJul 24, 20261133,634

Canada held a Canadian-only ribbon-cutting for the Gordie Howe International Bridge in Windsor, Ontario, after canceling a planned joint binational opening with U.S. officials. The office of Canada’s infrastructure minister said, "In light of trade action threatened by the United States earlier this week, it would be inappropriate to proceed with a celebratory event between the two countries." The span linking Windsor and Detroit is complete and officials say it will begin carrying traffic in the coming days. CBC recalled the June 14, 2024 moment when crew members Jason Huggett of Ontario and Casey Whitson of Michigan shook hands as the bridge’s last edge girders were connected, a photo the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority called historic. Both men described the connection as an "iconic moment" and highlighted the cross-border teamwork on the project. The Canada-only ceremony and the timing of the opening followed recent U.S. trade threats and a previously reported U.S.-ordered delay, leaving diplomatic ties a live issue as the bridge goes into service.

Trump: “Canada disinvited the US to the opening of the Gordie Howe Bridge, which is fine, considering they are paying substantial TARIFFS, but the original Deal on the Bridge, which was terribly negotiated by a previous Administration, no longer stands. We changed terms so that the US now gets 50%”

Trump: “Canada disinvited the United States of America to the opening of the Gordie Howe Bridge, which is fine, considering they are paying substantial TARIFFS to the United States, but the original Deal on the Bridge, which was terribly negotiated by a previous Administration, no longer stands. We changed the terms of the Deal so that the United States of America now gets 50% of the Profit. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP”

Carney needs to do his very best to pop the US stock market like a pimple before the election, rather than take even a small risk it lingers on just barely past then before the inevitable recession hits. There’s already a ton of stress on the system. It’s doable if he’s strategic about it.

Sorry Buddy18

As I said before, the Americans successfully extorted us, now they're pissed that we weren't willing to clap like seals for our own extortion.

A robber baron. The bridge was 100% paid for by Canada (it cost $6.4B+ to build). (Also, for the billionth time, Canadians don't pay the tariffs; US folks do.)

I’m not trying to doom. It just feels like, every day, it’s more shit piled on a massive pile of steaming shit. Cronies everywhere, billionaires making way more when we’re all feeling a crunch, a country totally built on bullying and no one can do anything. People kidnapped off the streets by goons,

The "art of the deal" is not to renege on every deal you make. Nobody will make deals with you in future if you do that. Trump is doing terrible longterm damage to the US. Why would anyone deal with them again, save at arms' length?

unfortunately, this seems to be confirmed that Canada has agreed to an agreement modification by which 50% of toll revenue goes to a United States-Canada Economic Development Fund established and controlled solely by the United States gordiehoweinternationalbridge.com/proposed-agr...

Love how we're respected around the world like never before, but also, no one wants us at their party...

We have a tyrant thinking he can rule by decree, and this weekend the reporters who cover him, whom he insults, will join him for a fancy dinner. I don’t really think we’re living in a democracy right now, I just don’t.

1st - CONs made the deal to PAY 100% of the bridge. 2nd - CA is working with a malignant narcissist who will criminally shake down anyone to line his own pockets. 3rd - If this deal (though not ideal) were not made, the bridge would remain closed, and we'd get NOTHING!! www.cbc.ca/news/politic...
