Canada held a Canadian-only ceremonial opening for the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit after U.S. officials were disinvited amid a tariff dispute triggered by President Trump’s announcement of a 50 percent tariff on certain Canadian imports. The bridge’s final structural steel was joined on June 14, 2024, marked by a symbolic handshake between Canadian iron worker Jason Huggett and American Casey Whitson, a member of Iron Workers Local 25 in Novi, Michigan. Windsor Detroit Bridge Authority called that moment historic and a symbol of binational teamwork. Officials say vehicle traffic on the new bridge is scheduled to begin on July 27. The planned joint U.S.-Canada ceremony was canceled because of the tariff dispute, so Canada will proceed with its own opening events while cross-border operations are set to start on the announced date.
