Charles Leclerc set the pace in FP1 at the Hungaroring with a 1:19.075 lap, 0.484 seconds clear of Max Verstappen, but his session ended early when his Ferrari suffered a failure and stopped in the pit lane. Lance Stroll spun as the left rear suspension on Aston Martin's largely new car appeared to break at Turn Three with about 20 minutes remaining. Aston Martin technical chief Adrian Newey called the session's provisional results "promising" while stressing the team must understand the unexpected failure before deciding next steps. The new Aston Martin is effectively a rewritten car, only the front suspension, engine and gearbox are unchanged and the revised chassis required FIA re-homologation after significant weight reduction. Fernando Alonso was 13th, 2.475 seconds off Leclerc, a notable improvement on Aston Martin's earlier deficits this season. Honda, Aston Martin's engine partner, will bring an upgraded power unit to the Dutch Grand Prix after the summer break.
