The fourth and penultimate season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds launched this week with “Valles Marineris”, what is essentially a classic Star Trek time travel episode.

After six weeks of dangerous missions, non-stop adventures across the quadrant, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) leads his crew to chart an interstellar storm, a phenomenon that his Chief Engineer Pelia (Carol Kane) describes as “space-time gone wild.” When the Enterprise picks up a distress signal from inside the storm, Pike mounts a daring rescue mission that ends up throwing the ship through not just space – but time itself.

Unable to get their bearings from the stars, the Enterprise beams an away team down to a local planet in the hopes of harvesting supplies, precious urinium that is necessary to power the ship’s warp drive. However, while the ground team are working on solving this problem, the Enterprise encounters a pre-warp space ship belonging to an alien species. Battle Commander Cassel (Saffron Burrows) lays claim to the Federation ship as “salvage” as part of her species’ generational war.

Cassel explains that her people have been locked in an extended conflict with a monstrous insectoid species known as the Dol’drm, “a terrible and destructive enemy” who reside on the fifth planet of the system and seek to expand and consume everything in their path. “They are insects,” Cassel warns Pike. “They do not speak or reason as we do. They simply feed and move forward.” It seems that the only possible way to ensure peace is through genocide of these monsters.

Naturally, “Valles Marineris” is building a very heavily-telegraphed twist. The Enterprise has been thrown backwards in time, and has found itself in the Solar System. The planet that the away team is visiting is Earth, populated by the dinosaurs. Cassel and her people are Martians, from millions of years before the red planet became uninhabitable.

Watched S04E01 of Strange New Worlds last night. I'm not sure how I feel about it. On one hand, a good romp! On the other, I wish the writers had kept in mind in-universe rules a bit more...I like the *science* in my sci-fi, especially with respect to established canonical technology. (More below)

Yeah the more I think about last night's Strange New Worlds, the less I like it. I'm tired of them only having two modes, whacky and grim, and that episode took the worst impulses of both and tried to smoosh them together.
