Matchbox: The Movie trailer debuts, streams Oct 9 on Apple TV
...yea, okay. That's it, we made it. This is the peak. This is the MOST tenuous, tangential, "What the hell is even the point?" IP-branding movie ever. It's IMPOSSIBLE to be more "this" than THIS and not be joking about it 🤦♂️ youtu.be/7xfqITrMDcI?...
No, for real though: Watch this, then go pen your HANDWRITTEN APOLOGIES to Kevin Feige, James Gunn, Kathleen Kennedy, those 'Rings of Power' people and everyone else you've been smug to for the last 20 years - CLEARLY we didn't know how good we had it 😭 youtu.be/7xfqITrMDcI?...
I thought Battleship (2012) was a bit too much; like how do you make a feature-length movie over a board game featuring zero characters? And then this dropped.
"We played with the toys once" is the license hook? jfc This is so easy...Ant-Man got them halfway there. Heist at Big Science Place goes wrong. Bad guys and their super hot getaway rides are shrunk by science beam, along with the heroes. Action winds up at a house where a kid plays with Matchbox
The weird thing for me is that Matchbox was the quintessential BRITISH toy brand! I was playing with Matchbox cars growing up in England in the mid-'60s. The era of The Beatles, The Kinks, and shit. Mattel didn't even buy the brand until the late '90s! How the hell does this play in America?
I feel like you've repressed your memory of "Battleship", maybe. But I agree that this is absolutely on par.
Ngl, the shotgun gag got me. Tho it felt like someone was waiting decades to do a T2 parody like that.
So I watched this. And all I can do (as I would have done if @peter.petermorwood.com was here) is roll my eyes and mutter, "Somebody wrote this and turned it in, and *the check cleared.*" 🙄
I don't know, it looks fun to me. Like if they wanted to be absurd, go for being absurd. It might make a fun Fast and Furious replacement. Plus I laughed at the gun fail bit.
This may be the biggest budgeted 30 ROCK bit ever made.
"Hey, remember when we used to play Matchbox cars?" 5 seconds later "Jesus Christ it's Jason Bourne" 2 hours later "What a Matchbox car story, huh?" They're not even trying to justify the IP anymore. I can't wait for the Etch-a-Sketch heist movie.
The worst part is this might be a perfectly enjoyable little action spy comedy and if it were called something like Spy Guy we'd all say "that was fun" but now I kind of hate this movie.
The Etch-A-Sketch movie, in which a team of thieves attempt to steal priceless artworks during an earthquake but learn that maybe art’s ephemerality is its greatest value
I like how this trailer implies these people played with Matchbox cars when they were kids and now as adults that's their only frame of reference for cars and other vehicles www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xfq...
This could not be more of a "We had a movie and stapled this property's name on it" if it TRIED. Does it look like a fun popcorn type silly action film? Sure. Does it have anything to do with Matchbox? Noooooooooooope.
In Newfoundland they should re-title this DINKIES.
What is the opposite of THE ODYSSEY?
It looks like a stupid fun action flick and they just slapped the branding on it. It should have been called Hot Wheels though.
Why does every movie right now seem like a joke?
I understand wanting to make a Fast & Furious knockoff. What I don't understand is paying extra to brand it as a franchise with limited nostalgic appeal to *baby boomers* and virtually none to anyone younger.
In Matchbox The Movie, former toy car buddies John Cena and Jessica Biel are attempting to thwart a terrorist threat. #sdcc #trailer www.avclub.com/matchbox-the...
Wasn’t there a Hot Wheels movie that was supposed to happen?
Matchbox kids did not act like this, Matchbox kids are introverted nerds who made dioramas and spent their time thinking about urban design This looks like what a Matchbox collector thinks Hot Wheels fans are like
Oh, christ, this is one of the many movies they hastily greenlit in the wake of Barbie's massive success. They actually made this thing? And it's gonna go straight to a streaming service nobody has?
Now THIS feels like something a coke-fueled 80s movie exec would greenlight. Is the world healing? Probably not, but I might get tipsy and watch this one day.
