Christopher Nolan used practical animatronics rather than CGI for the Circe 'pig' transformation scene in The Odyssey. GamesRadar reports the crew built pig animatronics that Samantha Morton, who plays Circe, could move and manipulate with her hands; clever editing and camera angles make it appear she is morphing Odysseus's men into pigs. Morton told Vanity Fair, "there's no CGI, and everything is real and in camera." Chief lighting technician Adam Chambers posted a photo of a pig-head animatronic to Instagram; that post was deleted and later reshared on Nolanarchive. The sequence recreates the episode in which Odysseus's companions eat Circe's food and are turned into pigs, and its practical execution underscores Nolan's stated no-CGI approach throughout the film.

Having read her translations of the Illiad and the odyssey, I find it easy to grasp her frustration with Nolan’s omissions and negation of women, while I still enjoyed the movie.* ^ calling it a movie strips it of cachet that the word “film” implies. It’s just entertainment, a commodity!

The whole discourse is ridiculous. Is the Nolan movie perfect? No. Is Wilson's critique the final word on it? No. There's mania and bad faith everywhere! This is like the Wuthering Heights thing except I didn't care about that and could be amused by it!

Emily Wilson was on the PBS Newshour recently. When Jeffrey Brown lobbed her a softball about Nolan's film, she very gracefully avoided an ad hominem. But she DID show off her tattoos🙂 Full disclosure: I haven't yet seen the film. Which would seem, in Hollywood parlance, a sword-and-sandals pic.

I guess if you are going to express your opinion in such forthright terms (would be embarrassed to write the script, call into account Nolan's politics and ethics) then you shouldn't make so many mistakes in what is actually in the film. Graceless, certainly in tone; but worse, just often wrong.

genuinely enjoying seeing the polarized reactions to the odyssey bc i learn something new from em (i enjoyed it and think that nolan made an effort to acknowledge the poison to masculinity his cultural legacy has left, even if he hits about 50% of his targets and walks into a rake with the others)
