Zinedine Zidane has been confirmed as head coach of the France national team, succeeding Didier Deschamps after his 14-year tenure ended following France’s semi-final loss to Spain at the 2026 World Cup. Zidane, 54, a World Cup winner with France in 1998, has signed a contract to lead the national side through the 2030 World Cup qualifying cycle. French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo called the appointment the meeting of a "legend" and a team with "rare potential." Zidane has not managed since leaving Real Madrid for a second time in 2021; his managerial honours at Madrid include three consecutive Champions League titles and a La Liga title in 2016-17, and a second league title in 2019-20 after his 2019 return. He said the role was "a great source of pride," thanked Deschamps for 14 years of service, and set "high ambitions for the French national team." Zidane’s first competitive match in charge will be France’s Nations League trip to Turkey on 25 September, and he will also oversee qualification for Euro 2028.
