Bird of the Day, theme 'Multi Colour'

natureJul 29, 202624913,471

Bird of the Day is a daily community event and today's theme is #MultiColour, defined as birds with three or more colours in their plumage, with an alternate theme #DucksOutOfWater. Entries show vivid plumage studies and field photos, plus a steady thread of ducks posed on land or structures. Standout posts include a purple glossy starling, a rainbow coloured Green Jay photographed in Austin, and a Mandarin Duck that meets both the MultiColour and DucksOutOfWater themes. Other examples in the gallery include mallard pairs on jetty or rocks and a male ruby-throated hummingbird showing iridescent throat colouration.

A close-up portrait photo of a purple glossy starling (Lamprotornis purpureus) in profile as it gazes upward, directly over its head. It's a large songbird with very shiny, iridescent feathers in multiple vivid hues including a violet head, magenta throat, deep indigo blue torso, and bright greenish-blue wings. It has a large yellow eye that stands out strikingly against its cool-toned plumage. The background is dark and dim in shady conditions and a few bare brown branches are visible around the bird.

Close-up portrait of a Blue Tit perched on a slender, leafless twig, bathed in warm golden sunlight. The tiny bird’s vivid blue crown, wings and nape contrast beautifully with its white cheeks, black eye stripe and bib, while its soft yellow breast glows in the low-angle light. Fine feather detail is crisp across the face and body, and the bird grips the twig delicately with both feet, appearing alert as it looks slightly downward. The background melts into a smooth blur of amber and brown stems, creating a rich, autumnal backdrop that makes the Blue Tit stand out vividly.

Photo by Kort Duce A red-winged blackbird stomps and sings atop a post supporting a sign that reads, "Habitat Area – No Access Beyond This Point," at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado. In this vertical color photograph, a 4×4 wooden post rises through the center of the frame, supporting a white sign with black lettering that reads, "Habitat Area – No Access Beyond This Point." Perched atop the post, a male red-winged blackbird is shown in left profile with its beak wide open in mid-song. As it sings, the bird balances on one leg while lifting the other, preparing to stomp down in a spirited territorial display. The background is softly blurred, with tawny prairie grasses giving way to green shrubs and trees. This lively portrait captures a male red-winged blackbird defending its territory within a protected wetland habitat that is essential to its survival.

He has a blue head, tan wings with a bright purple section and some white. His wife is closer to the water and standing up with her head tucked to her neck. Her feathers are mostly brown with tan edges, but you can see a bit of white feathers by her tail.

He has an orange head, reflective green gorget, red back, yellow wings and tail, and some unusual display structures - two turquoise-tipped fans that emerge from the shoulders, and two long curled ribbon-like tail feathers that give rise to one of the bird's other names, "Lyre-tailed King"

A Lakeland scene on a cloudy March day at Derwent Water, Keswick in the English Lake District. In the foreground is the end of a wooden jetty with two wooden poles on either side of it. Two male Mallard ducks and one female Mallard are standing near the edge of the jetty close to the lake. The steel grey lake is quite calm with only some light ripples in the water. In the background are two traditional wooden launch boats at their moorings. Behind this with a light dusting of snow on it, framed by the wooden jetty posts is the prominent shape of Skiddaw mountain one of the Northern Fells.

This macro photo shows a fourteen-spot ladybird (Propylea quattuordecimpunctata) exploring the edge of a fresh green leaf. The tiny beetle is viewed from a slightly elevated front angle, revealing its distinctive cream-yellow wing cases marked with an irregular mosaic of glossy black patches. Its black pronotum bears pale markings, while its fine legs and short antennae grip the leaf’s edge as if pausing before continuing its journey. The bright green leaf fills much of the frame, its gently textured surface and serrated edge providing a vivid backdrop to the striking ladybird. A smooth, softly blurred green background isolates the subject beautifully, drawing attention to the intricate patterning and polished sheen of the beetle. The simple composition and generous negative space emphasise the scale of this tiny insect within its natural environment.
