Bird of the Day, theme 'Multi Colour'

Bird of the Day is a daily community event and today's theme is #MultiColour, defined as birds with three or more colours in their plumage, with an alternate theme #DucksOutOfWater. Entries show vivid plumage studies and field photos, plus a steady thread of ducks posed on land or structures. Standout posts include a purple glossy starling, a rainbow coloured Green Jay photographed in Austin, and a Mandarin Duck that meets both the MultiColour and DucksOutOfWater themes. Other examples in the gallery include mallard pairs on jetty or rocks and a male ruby-throated hummingbird showing iridescent throat colouration.

With the Cardinal and an occasional Bluejay being the exception, brown birds are mostly all I ever see here in Indiana. Men ruined the environments of Red-winged Blackbirds and Canaries. Even herons are minimal this year. Wrens. Robins. Why can't we have any brilliantly colored beauties?

You're right. Back home we call European Finches simply Thistle Finches. You will always find them on thistles. They are great song birds and people used to catch and cage them (illegally of course) for their singing.
