The Chicago White Sox acquired All-Star right-hander Luis Castillo from the Seattle Mariners in a trade at the deadline. Seattle received reliever Seranthony Domínguez, outfielder Nolan Jones and catching prospect Boston Smith in return. Castillo had joined the Mariners less than 24 hours before the deal after Seattle traded for him from the Cincinnati Reds, and in his Mariners debut he struck out eight over 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits before being removed after 106 pitches when Kyle Higashioka hit a two-run homer. Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto praised Castillo as "in the prime of his career" after Seattle had acquired him. The White Sox made the move to bolster their rotation as part of a division title push.
