Blue Jays trade Kevin Gausman to Cubs

The Toronto Blue Jays traded right-hander Kevin Gausman to the Chicago Cubs in a deal that sends outfield prospect Brett Bateman and infield prospect Ty Southisene to Toronto, SportsEthos and multiple reports including Mitch Bannon, Ken Rosenthal, and Mark Feinsand confirmed. The Cubs add Gausman as a veteran rotation piece while the Blue Jays receive the Cubs No. 13 prospect Ty Southisene and outfielder Brett Bateman, listed as the Cubs No. 21 prospect by one report. Chicago has not yet announced where Gausman will slot in its rotation and is still weighing the status of injured reliever Clay Holmes, who recently threw a 73-pitch rehab outing. Several observers called the return for Gausman light for a veteran starter, while many Blue Jays posts praised Gausman’s contribution to Toronto over the past five years and wished him well with the Cubs.

I figured when the Jays signed Kevin Gausman that giving a five-year deal to a 30 year-old starter, you hope to get three good years. He gave 4 and 2/3s, plus last year’s postseason, and was fun to watch and easy to root for. Forever a good dude. Forever a Blue Jay.

This is the take. The offense let Gaus down in the postseason last year, wasting great start after great start, and they did it again all season this year. After all that, he still wanted to stay. Think about that for a minute. The only guy who doesn't wear this failure is Kevin Gausman.

Dalton Varsho was exactly as advertised for the balance of his Blue Jays tenure. League average bat and good OF defense. He’ll never get the “credit” he deserves for the Game 7 World Series loss and, unless you’re Jeff Hoffman, that’s probably for the best.

Kind of drives me crazy that they never used him as a catcher. It just felt like there was such an opportunity for that roster flexibility that it would’ve made sense at least a couple of times to depend on him as the backup instead of Heineman.

Kevin Gausman will forever be a #Bluejay. One of the best signings in team history, and he’s carried us through the last 5 years, and was a pivotal player in 2025. Cubs, you have a good one. Treat him well, and hopefully it’s not the last time Gausman wears a Jays uniform.

With Daulton Varsho moving across the field in Houston, I'd love to see Brett Bateman take over CF for the rest of the season. Hitting .315 with a .430 OBP in AAA (granted, the PCL), elite speed, strong defence. Let's see if he can be #Bluejays version of Chandler Simpson.

Cubs haven't made any rotation decisions yet for where Kevin Gausman and Clay Holmes will slot in. Cubs want to talk to Holmes to see if he wants one more rehab start or if he's ready to come off IL. Holmes got up to 73 pitches yesterday in his third rehab start.
