Newcastle sign goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček from Braga

Newcastle United have signed Czech international goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček from Braga for £25.7 million, activating his release clause and signing him to a five-year contract. The 24-year-old flew to the club's La Manga training camp in Spain at the weekend to finalise the move and said he was excited to play in front of St James' Park’s 52,000 supporters. Horníček kept seven clean sheets during Braga's run to the Europa League semi-finals last season, the most of any goalkeeper in the competition, and Opta data placed him second for successful passes with 846 and fourth for passing accuracy at 75 percent in Portugal's top flight. Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson said Horníček has “firmly established himself as one of Europe’s top young goalkeepers” and praised his recent progress. At 6ft 6in, Horníček brings size and ball-playing ability to a club that kept only eight Premier League clean sheets last season and conceded 55 goals, prompting a summer rebuild in the goalkeeping department. Horníček joins a group of mainly teenage and early-20s arrivals but will be expected to take the new number one role as head coach Mattias Jaissle’s appointment is due to be formally announced.
