UN warns El Niño could push 50 million people into acute hunger
The main reason for developing our El Niño prediction capabilities is to mitigate its severe negative consequences.
From a moral standpoint, any wealthy nation that does not have zero fossil fuel emissions, should be banned from importing food. Especially importing food from poor nations facing famine.
Can anything be done? It seems like a net negative to predict something bad will happen if nothing can be done to prevent or mitigate it.
50m people are likely to be pushed into acute hunger because of El Niño. Studies suggest that global heating may be leading to even stronger El Niño events. In Britain, farmers are already warning about the impact of extreme heat on their harvests. What else needs to happen for us to take action?
There needs to be a campaign to get MPs to recall parliament to debate this emergency for Uk security & set a plan to tackle climate crisis drought & food shortages, paid for by windfall tax of fossil fuel & bank multi billion profits. Or it will be unimaginable. bsky.app/profile/levi...
Major investment by Govt in Solar Farms. Grow more shade loving crops under the solar panels. Use floating solar panels on reservoirs to reduce evaporation. Privatise water and energy. Imprisonment for Climate change deniers because stupidity is no longer tolerated.
Rewind 30-40 years and listen to the warnings.
