Google to phase out Assistant, migrate features to Gemini

techAug 6, 2026684,943

Google will retire Google Assistant on eligible Android smartphones, tablets, Wear OS smartwatches, and associated Bluetooth headsets beginning September 4, when the company says the generative AI Gemini service will become the default assistant experience. Google has begun emailing Android users about the change and says that in the weeks after September 4 the option to switch back to the legacy Google Assistant will be permanently removed, so saying “Hey Google” or long-pressing the power button will awaken Gemini. A small set of smart home and automotive devices are excluded from the initial wave but Google confirmed those devices will transition to Gemini in the future. Phones running Android 9 or below or otherwise incapable of supporting Gemini will keep a streamlined version of Google Assistant for basic commands. Google delayed an earlier plan to end Assistant by late 2025 and pushed the full shutdown toward late 2026, a six-month extension Google says allowed Gemini’s mobile experience to mature. SecurityOnline notes functional gaps in Gemini today, including missing support for some podcast services, third-party music providers, and Interpreter Mode, and warns Gemini’s large language model architecture can produce verbal confirmations without actually executing actions. Google is timing the change ahead of a major hardware showcase on August 12, signaling a deliberate shift to embed Gemini at the center of Android going forward.

They're discontinuing Google Assistant in a month to make everyone start using Gemini instead, so I tried using it just now and it sucks ass

And it's free. If you charge for it, people ditch your phones. If you don't charge for it, the compute costs eat your company alive. But if you don't force it on everyone, your can't scam your shareholders into thinking Gemini is being adopted en masse. Tearing the copper out of the walls, man ...

There are people on here who get very grumpy when people "who don't know about AI" complain about AI - bad news for you guys I guess!

Every company pushing their new 'AI product': Use this new product! Everyone: Nah, it sucks, I prefer the old thing. Company: *shoots old thing* I wasn't fuckin' asking.

ah yes, this brings back memories of Google Wave replacing Google Reader

I think people on here kind of understate the organic interest in AI sometimes, like, a lot of otherwise not tech savvy people are futzing around with ChatGPT, but the thing is, you don’t make product decisions like this unless you have some engagement numbers you desperately need to juice.

Books will be written on how Google, the literal inventor of GPT and the first to build a LLM (LMChat), fumbled this.

Me: "Okay Google, text [the wife]" Gemini: "What would you like to say to [wife]?" Me: "Anything you want to add to the shopping list before I hit the store?" Gemini: "I cannot find a shopping list would you like to create one?"

My new phone had Gemini as the default assistant and the first time I tried to use it for directions out on a route it cheerily told me the definition of a gas station instead. I instantly pulled over and disabled every Gemini thing I could on the damned thing. Utterly useless joke software.

It is not a novel observation at this point, but the collapse of Google’s Gemini as a frontier model series is still astonishing. Unlike Meta & SpaceX, Google has captive Gemini customers at an enterprise level using their chatbot, so the fact that they are pushed towards Gemini 3.1 Pro is a problem
