A New Mexico judge ordered Meta Platforms to pay a total of $942 million and to impose new safety measures for underage users of Facebook and Instagram. The ruling requires Meta to create a new $567 million abatement fund in addition to $375 million in civil penalties that a jury previously awarded. The judge also directed Meta to limit how long underage users in New Mexico can spend on its apps, hide like counts by default for those users, and disclose platform risks to them. The decision increases the financial cost of the landmark child safety verdict against Meta and labels concrete operational changes the company must implement in the state. The New Mexico ruling comes as a separate multistate trial brought by four attorneys general prepares to begin jury selection in Oakland next week, potentially extending legal exposure for Meta.
