Total solar eclipse to cross parts of Europe on Aug 12
The UK will experience a partial solar eclipse on Wednesday 12 August. The extent of the Sun's coverage and the timing of maximum obscuration will differ across the country. Never look directly at the sun; use a pinhole projector or certified eclipse glasses to view it.

martinput7Quite extensive. I camped in Cornwall for the 1999 total eclipse. We attended a watch party at Goonhilly Earth Station. We had a break in the cloud at the precise moment and witnessed the full event without cloud or rain. Most of the country didn't get that lucky, clouds and rain spoilt it.

The Parc Astronòmic Muntanyes de Prades makes it into a nice party that we will —of course— join. We are all just like the Maya/Incas/Egyptians/Stonehenge people, if you think about it 😉

I remember with the last eclipse I worked in an office near Hyde Park & we were all permitted to go to the Park with our glasses & pin hole cameras to observe it. My most vivid memory was how silent the birds went when the eclipse happened. It was so eery!

I had a look at Amazon which has loads of "ISO 12312-2 certified solar glasses". Given how rife Amazon is with fakes, any advice on where to get safe eclipse specs in the UK?

Mark Papp5In the late ‘60s I found out there’d be a total eclipse in August ‘99. I was determined to see it. I learned to scuba dive in ‘95 and chartered a Falmouth dive boat for the week, so that my friends and I would be on the eclipse’s centre line. It was cloudy.
