A woman the BBC calls Lucy says a Travelodge receptionist handed a key to her abuser at a London hotel in October 2025 after he told staff his girlfriend was upstairs having a seizure. The man used the key to find her room, physically attacked her and tried to grab her phone; after he briefly left and returned, he kicked the hotel room door off its hinges and forced his way back in. Lucy ran downstairs shaking and crying; she says the hotel failed her and that a place she thought would be safe was breached. Travelodge told the BBC it investigated, found the attacker had given Lucy's full name and room number, and acknowledged that an established policy to never confirm a guest was staying at a hotel was not followed. The company said such incidents were very rare, that customer safety remained a priority and that staff had recently received training, and it said it had already made immediate changes to room access policy to require explicit permission from the guest before issuing additional or replacement keys. The BBC also reports a July incident in Leeds in which a woman woke to an unknown man at the end of her bed who said he had been given a key, illustrating similar failures at multiple sites.

I spent roughly 10 years in the hotel industry, and that is a No-No of the highest level! If you can't provide ID for the registration, you do not get a key.

Unbelievable. With so many people looking for a job surely they could have found someone with a brain. At the very least they should have rung an ambulance if they thought she was having a seizure and gone up to the room. These chains employ too few people.

We were in a Travelodge a couple of weeks back and a guy at reception was kicking off because he didn't have his key card and the receptionist (a young lady on her own, obviously) wouldn't let him in. They are so understaffed. A young lady shouldn't be put in that situation.

You could say traditional metal keys could solve this problem. If they couldn't activate more and they could see one of the keys or two of the keys to a room had already been allocated, then they wouldn't be able to accidentally hand out keys to random men/abusers
