PM asks Justice Secretary to block early release of PC Harper's killers
Just heard on Radio 5 Live that one of Andy Burnham's bright ideas for easing the shortage of prison places to do with PC Harper, is to allow the use of the female prison estate for male prisoners.

The early release of the two who killed PC Harper is abhorrent and I remain convinced that the 27k prisoners who are jailed for non violent offences should be released first inc all protesters. However let's be crystal clear, 1) this is the fault of 14 years of Tory mis-rule, 1/2

I don't see why the killers of a police officer, despicable though the crime is, should be treated any differently from other killers.
Jen D2The outrage at the time was the jury finding for manslaughter, not murder. Which was why the laws amended, but couldn’t be retrospective. These two weren’t the drivers, despicable as their actions were. That man remains in prison.

Eeeen2I can accept that early prisoner releases will always cause concern. The judiciary must always be free from political control though. ALWAYS. Once politicians control the judiciary we are lost.
Rob Jacobs1Big picture. We have too many people in prison. Advanced economies, with good rehabilitation rates (Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, etc) have around 70 people per 100k in prison. The UK is double that & more at 155. Don't get me started on America - 550!
David Robson1I ask again - why not free up prison spaces (and potentially permanently reduce the number of prisoners) by releasing low-risk inmates and devising alternative community based sentences? They do not need to be locked up. They are only locked up because the law says ‘lock them up’. Change the law.
