UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation accused FIFA and president Gianni Infantino of deception and a “fundamental breach of trust” over his failed plan to sell an interest in the World Cup, in an open letter made public Monday. The letter was co-signed by UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin, AFC president Salman Bin Ibrahim Al-Khalifa, CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani and the confederations' general secretaries and said Infantino had placed himself above the collective that entrusted him with authority. FIFA apologized for errors in the proposal and senior staff at a crisis meeting in Morocco said they reaffirmed their full support for Infantino’s presidency, but UEFA had previously threatened to boycott the World Cup and other FIFA competitions. National bodies have reacted: Norway’s federation called for Infantino to step down and England’s Football Association withdrew its support for his re-election next March. U.S. President Donald Trump publicly defended Infantino on social media, saying FIFA would be making a “terrible mistake” to replace him. The confederations said their joint stance reflects a duty to protect the game and called for leadership that serves football rather than commands it, leaving immediate consequences uncertain as calls for resignations and boycotts remain in play.

If the World Cup becomes beholden to shareholders, it will inevitably be hollowed out to maximize returns for investors, until it starts resembling the Super Bowl meaning, less a sporting event and more an enormous commercial spectacle where the game itself almost feels secondary.
