Tropical Storm Lala threatens Hawaii's Big Island

Tropical Storm Lala formed Thursday in the Pacific Ocean and a hurricane watch has been issued for the Big Island of Hawaii, forecasters said.

ʻOhana across Hawaiʻi should prepare now as Tropical Storm Lala approaches the islands. A Hurricane Watch is in effect for Hawaiʻi Island, but heavy rain, strong winds, flooding, mudslides and dangerous surf could affect communities throughout the state.

Tropical storm Lala is getting a lot of reconnisence attention this afternoon. Rightfully so. NOAA now expects the storm to reach category 1 strength by Saturday.

Due to the approaching Tropical Storm Lala, Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park will close at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2026. The park will remain closed Saturday, August 15, and Sunday, August 16. Please do not enter the park while the closure is in effect.

Potential Tropical Cyclone #01C is forecast to become a tropical storm (the next Central Pacific name is #Lala, not a #BB28 reference) and take a track toward the Hawaiian Islands. Tropical storm or hurricane conditions are possible on the islands this weekend.

11AM update: Hurricane Watch remains in effect for Hawaii County. Tropical Storm Lala is currently 655 miles ESE of Hilo and is moving WNW at 9 miles per hour. The Big Island and Maui could see 5 to 10 inches of rain, with extreme localized totals up to 25 inches possible over steep terrain. #Hawaii
