A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Flores, Indonesia, shortly before 05:00 local time on Saturday, killing at least 47 people, Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency said. The quake had a depth of 15 km and was followed by dozens of aftershocks, including a 6.1 magnitude tremor; a separate magnitude 6.4 quake was later felt in North Sumatra. Authorities said hundreds of buildings were damaged, with preliminary reports of more than 150 houses severely damaged plus dozens of schools, health facilities, places of worship and public offices. Manggarai was hardest hit with 24 fatalities recorded there, including 17 in East Manggarai and three in Sikka; at least one death was reported in each of Ngada, Ende and West Manggarai provinces. Governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena said many victims were killed in their sleep when rubble collapsed, and BNPB reported at least two people seriously injured and 11 slightly injured. A tsunami warning was issued then lifted about three hours later when no significant sea rise was detected, and about 2,000 people evacuated or relocated themselves. Search and rescue operations and aid are being sent to the remote, mountainous region while authorities continue damage assessments and rescue work.
