Spider-Man: Brand New Day concept art faces AI‑use backlash
The art book for ‘SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY’ reveals that generative AI was used in concept design of NYC for the film. (Source: thedirect.com/article/spid...)
If only there was some real place called New York City to base the design off of….
Using Generative AI for the the concept design of NYC. Using *Generative AI*. For the concept design of *NYC*. The concept design. Of NYC.
This is the AI concept art in the art book. It’s just this one image that was AI generated, but that’s still one too many. It’s unclear if AI was used in the final product or if that image was made just for the art book.
Matt Reeves used actual artists to design a fully realized Gotham City that would populate at any camera angle for background plates, over 6 years ago and it still looks glorious…
Fucking pathetic. NYC is one of the most famous cities in the world. Imagine not looking up actual photos of a real place cuz you're using the scientifically proven brainrot machine.
Jesus Christ. It’s NYC. JUST GO THERE, YOU HAD THE BUDGET
Grok visualise a place called New York for me I simply can't do it It was this image apparently 😭
For NYC? .... didn't Marvel have an office in NYC?
What? WHAT? You used AI. To generate pictures. Of New York City. WHY? You couldn't find any photos of NEW YORK CITY?? You couldn't GO to New York City? It's probably the most photographed city on Earth! Slop users like to claim it's not destroying their brains, and I present this as evidence.
What gets me about this is that new york city is a real place with millions of photos of it they could have just searched through if they didn't want to do any primary work
os qrt assim oooo amore vamo acordar
and once again, it's companies and orgs with all the money in the world to pay someone a proper wage up do the job but cutting corners with AI to hoard themselves more money
Well, yeah. Fuck Marvel/Disney. Not going to watch any of it now
This genuinely might be one of the most stupid things I've heard of. Generative AI is an absolute rot.
I mean look lads how eleas are they going to find a visual reference for New York City? You're all being very unreasonable here
I mean if you were going to be cheap about it, probably could have found previous concept art for "Spider-Man in New York" somewhere.
This is the AI concept art in the art book. It’s just this one image that was AI generated, but that’s still one too many. It’s unclear if AI was used in the final product or if that image was made just for the art book.
All I know is that Secret Invasion used it for its opening title sequence...
Hate it when the taxi I'm in does whatever the fuck that is
The venn diagram of people who would pay money for an art book, and people who want to see Ai in it are two circles separated by an ocean.
It doesn't even look good? I feel like just grabbing a random picture from any street would have been way better
It's one AI image *they specifically show*. The assumption that it is the only one actually used seems wild to me.
They're asking around forty-five bucks for this. I'd be pissed beyond reason if I spent money on a book called 'The ART of the Movie', and instead of art I'd get...this shit.
People will say 'it's just one image,' but, for me, it erodes trust in what their whole process is. One is too many
The fact this could easily be mistaken for San Francisco or Chicago shows that this was unnecessary.
Absolutely the most pointless use of AI they could have done. Also why even put it in the book? Surely they know it'll cast a stink on everything. And art book customers, they'll get stinky about it for sure!
Billion dollar franchise and they can’t make their own concept art?
Marvel already admitted that the title sequence of Secret Invasion is A.i., so this doesn't surprise me. Marvel Studios was originally started so the same artists making the comics could have control over how the movies were made. Now the movies aren't even always using actual artists.
we literally had like a whole ass movie about the dangerous of AI, in this same franchise. yes i dont think ChatGPT is going to drop a building from space on us but still!!!
There's never a point at which they've made "enough money". It's like in "The Fall of the House of Usher" when Daupin asks Roderick if there would ever be a point at which he'd made enough money to stop, and Roderick says that's a stupid question, of course there isn't it.
IN A FUCKING ART BOOK
We just need to boycott all these companies. There are so many great old movies and books and video games there’s options
Damn it, Marvel! I've been defending this movie, too! I've been to see it twice! It's good! Why do you have to do your fans dirty like this?
this is the worst use of AI art, imo, because the franchise can ABSOLUTELY afford real artists, and work like this is the lifeblood of the career field.
I find it hard to believe that they would use shitty AI that looks like crap for concept art but not in the movie. These corporations only care about money. Not art. Not story. Not movies. Not artists. Not anything but fucking money. Gross.
I’ve had a deep in the guts fear that Disneybwould turn to genAI for Star Wars and Marvel while both have independently churning out banger stories outside the confines of corporate mooring, yet, even in a movie I liked so much, in a city so extensively photographed, some chud used AI.
I don't know about anyone other than myself and my perception but FOR ME AI art makes my brain hurt to look at it. So much does not make sense at first glance that staring causes me to hit 'close' on a video every freaking time ...shit I can tell an ai person a freaking mile away You do too, you do!
‘Supergirl’ and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ are among the latest films revealed to have used generative AI during the concept art process. Both films used the technology to help develop concept designs for their respective productions.
how about using artists. you know, those creatures with imagination and creativity. ffs
Two films I will now never see, nor purchase on digital or Blu-ray. Thanks for that.
1/2 They could’ve used actual image references, concept artists, or even existing comic-book designs as reference material. And considering this is Lobo, a character with decades of established visual material, there’s certainly no shortage of references to work from.
To the god damn ground.
Sooooo Doomsday is prolly the same and they won’t reveal it until after several weeks of box office. Dammit.
not surprised, but disappointed nonetheless
Oh look at that, took until the latter neared 2 billion dollars for them to reveal that. S'almost like they know people hate AI so they're trying to hide it until it's safe to admit it cuz they already got your money. Yet another reason I find it difficult to get excited about anything new.
I'm not gonna let this ruin my opinion of BND because so much REAL talent, care, and dedication went into it. But GOD they just had to let something bring it down, huh.
Bueno, ya podemos asumir de antemano que cualquier peli de superhéroes o ciencia ficción taquillera va a haber usado ia y actuar en consecuencia
and now I'm never gonna watch either of em
This is the sort of shit that you have to boycott studios to send a message, because they won't tell you which movies used it until it's too late.
People are losing jobs left and right. It's disgusting how they're replacing artists at every turn.
Wow. As if there weren't a ton of references from the source materials.
I don't think I like this trend
Just why? Can these people even think of a concept design idea without using ai?
same energy as being told santa claus isn't real
In a mistake I won't make again, I initially glanced over an image in Spider-Man: Brand New Day - The Art of the Movie, but after speaking with multiple artists, in my opinion it looks like it was made using AI. I updated my review to reflect this and will be very cautious with future books! 1/2
It's important to note that this was not done by a current or former member of the Visual Development team, each of which are extremely talented and do not use AI. If this is indeed AI, it's very disappointing.
Fire escape by M.C. Escher...
Oh no, not another artbook with AI slop 😢 And once again, the same question: how could such a glaring error make it into an official book? It’s just too depressing—leave me by the side of the road; I’ll only slow you down...
There's apparently ai added to the BND art book and that's gross
Enhorabuena a los que no solo habéis pagado por ver esa peli en la que usaron IA para el conceptart (como poco), si no que además la habéis publicitado como si el departamento de marketing que la escribió os hubiera pagado personalmente.
“But the AI isn’t in the actual product-“ AI shouldn’t be used before, during, or after the release of anything. It just shows how little care you actually have for the thing you’re making and would rather be cheap and lazy instead of actually believing in what you’re making.
This is not the first artbook I've seen where there is AI slop, even though the artists on the production are against it. Concept art has always been embellished before publishing of art books: it gets tightened up, cropped or rendered. But now generative image models are added to the mix. 🫠
I have zero to no tolerance for when it comes to generative AI garbage infesting movies, shows, etc. But now it’s happening to movies like Brand New Day and Supergirl. My policy is to not to make excuses for anyone who uses AI like that but now I’m at an impasse. Idk if I’m overthinking things…
IMO we really need to protest against the idea that GenAI could be used for storyboarding/concept art. That's the biggest sphere most vulnerable to be taken over by AI art because studios don't seem to care to pay real artists for it and not a whole lot of people seem to have an idea about it.
I am not letting some asshole AI techbro ruin Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It is still made by people as soon as the cameras rolled.
Here’s how i think on it. In the case of big studio film, there is some MBA business idiot demanding they use it. I’m sure it’s not all cases, but in some, people are just “using it” to get those kind of idiots to shut up and leave them alone.
