The Dallas Mavericks and five-time All-Star Klay Thompson have agreed to a contract buyout, and Thompson is expected to sign with the Miami Heat once he clears waivers on Sunday, league sources told outlets including ESPN. Thompson, 36, spent two seasons in Dallas after 13 with the Golden State Warriors and never appeared in a playoff game with the Mavericks; the team went 65-99 across his two seasons. Mavericks president Masai Ujiri thanked Thompson in a statement, calling him one of the great players and competitors of his generation. Thompson was the team’s most productive outside shooter over the last two years, making 418 three-pointers and appearing in 141 of a possible 164 regular-season games for Dallas. This past season Thompson averaged 11.7 points while shooting 38.3 percent from three on 7.6 attempts per game, shifting from a 72-start role in 2024-25 to a bench role in 2025-26. He was set to make $17.46 million in 2026-27 before the buyout, and contract details with Miami have not been finalized. News of the buyout coincided with veteran DeMar DeRozan entering talks with the Heat and later agreeing to a one-year deal with the Denver Nuggets.
